Linked tables will not open (Access 2000)

I have a frontend database on each of two networked computers (lap and desk) sharing a backend that sits on the desktop. Sometimes (inconsistent) I cannot open the tables from the laptop. The error message is that the database is open on the desktop and cannot be shared. However, the desktop database is not open - neither front nor backend.

I have searched the forum and cannot find anything - probably using the wrong terminology.

Any ideas what I need to do?

    Thank you very much,

    Two things to try:

Check in Tools Options Advanced that the Default Open Mode is Shared.

When you open a database an ldb file si created that keeps trackiong of locking information. I gets deleted when the db is closed. Sometimes it does not deleted (i.e. if the db crashes) and will prevent access to a db that is closed. So if you can find an ldb file (same name as the mdb file, same folder) when the mdb file is closed, delete the ldb file and try again
    Regards
    John

Thanks. Database is shared (default) No ldb is in the folder. I am familiar with that one.
I found something in KB for the problem with database in Novell. We use Windows XP. I will try the suggestion in KB - user has to have create rights on the folder the backend resides in. You would think that would be an issue all the time. However, in my situation, the error message does not come up every time I open the database on the lap top.
    I am puzzled!

If the permissions aren't right, the first person who opens the database opens it exclusively, regardless of his settings. It you can't create and delete an ldb file in that folder, then exclusive is the only way the database opens.

Thanks Charlotte. I will check the sharing rights.

It isn't sharing rights, it's permissions. All users who access that application must be able to create, edit and delete files or the problem will persist.

My ignorance. There is no security set for the database. Are you talking about permission for teh Access database or the permissions for the folder the backend resides in?
Sorry about being obtuse, I just want to be sure that I understand correctly.

Thanks for your patience and help.

Folder permissions. If the users don't have create, write and delete permissions to that folder, then only one person at a time can open the database, regardless of the sharing you have tried to set up.

Thanks, that is what I thought.
Again, thank you for your patience and help. I do not know what I would do without the help from this forum!
