    Registry Rapper

Registry Rapper is a template for allowing the use of programs that save their settings to the reigstry as portable applications. First it will check the registry for settings of the program and then save them if present. Then it will write the settings for the program to the registry, run the program and then rewrite the registry settings to a file for later use. It will then delete the settings from the registry; removing any trace of the program. Finally rewritting the original current local settings back to the registry. This program is a registry encapsulation program, which takes care of all the registry settings a program might need to run and make sure nothing is left behind on the host system. Allowing programs that were not created is portable (i.e saving their settings to .ini files within the program folder) to be used as portable. 196KB

    Alan - You must be psychic ! ! ! <img src=/S/yikes.gif border=0 alt=yikes width=15 height=15>

I was asked to look for something like this a couple of days ago. I started checking the site out.

Have you any experience with this product ? Although I see some advantages to this, I get a little concerned with a product dynamically modifying the registry (backup and restore points become extremely important).

Thanks n advance for any information you, or any lounger, can provide.

    Re: Registry Rapper

Sorry Scott, no personal experience with this one. It seemed like a (theoretically) clean & simple solution to what is probably a common problem; but as you say, there may be the potential for problems. You might get some insight looking at (or posting to) Registry Rapper Support and Information Forum | PortableApps.com. Please post any info you find.

    Re: Registry Rapper

    Hi Alan,

I can't determine if Registry Rapper can do what I need. For one thing, the web site seems to be having some problems or I can't reach it. Can't even get into the forum to ask my question.

It appears that I will have to replace my hard disk where my programs are loaded. I have one physical disk with a partition for programs and another partition for documents. Another physical disk for Windows and other operating system things.

I don't think just replacing the program disk and reloading the programs would work because of the registry settings. It seems like RR could unload the registry settings for my programs. I don't think I need the settings for anything else. I then reload the programs in the normal way and have the registry settings rebuilt as part of the loading process. I might be able to use RR to restore the old settings for each program.

At least that's my thinking. But I can't get into the RR site to see what a "portable application" is (I'd like to expand the definition to fit the above) or to register for the forum to ask the question.

Or are there other programs that would allow me to do the above?

    TIA

    Fred
