    Style List Navigation... (Office XP)

I just upgraded to XP today, and one little thing is driving me nuts... I'm working on a project with a large selection of styles, and I'm used to navigating round the style-list by hitting Alt-O-S and then the first letter of the style I want. This gets me close enough to the right one that the arrow keys can get me there very quickly.

This no longer seems to work in Word XP, and it is making editing a much longer task!

    Any help gratefully received...

In Word 2002 that key combo now brings up the Style Task
Pane -- which appears to have no ability to speed search.

What you want is the Style Dialog (known as "FormatStyle" or "Style...") or the Styles List (knows as "Style")

The list you can access with Ctrl-Shift-S.

The Style dialog is probably what you want, but it does not have a MS defined shortcut key. So, just assign it one and your troubles are over... <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>.

Do you know how to do that? The command you want to assign the shortcut key to is "FormatStyle."

Re: Style List Navigation... (Office XP)

I'm actually having the same problem, although your answer provides a possible solution. However, while I can select styles from the styles list, I can't edit the style from there. In Word 2000, if I displayed the styles dialog, I could either edit or select a style using alphabet jump-to keys. In Word 2002, this doesn't seem possible. The only time I can use alphabet jump-to keys is in the style list, not the Styles dialog or the Styles and Formatting Task Pane. This doesn't seem like progress to me. Am I missing something? I did seem to find out that if you display the Styles dialog in Word 2002, you can start typing the style name, and then down arrow and you can highlight it, but you're just as likely to begin editing the style as you are to apply it if you're not careful. I think you can type out the whole name and then apply it, but shouldn't just typing "n" to jump to "normal" be available other than in the style list? Thx. -Rich.

I guess the best way to think is this: The Style List is for setting (applying) a style to text or paragraphs. The Task Pane is for modifying or deleting Styles, and the FormatStyle (Style) Dialog is for both. I'd say it's a bit confusing, especially for your garden variety office worker. But MS is big on those task panes and the Style dialog and list aer a hold overs from previous versions.
