Inserting a page of links

    Hi all,

Can someone tell me how to do the following:

I have 10 primary links that appear on nearly all the pages on my business website: http://www.curvedmouldings.com

The site now has over 50 pages and it occurred to me that if I want to make a change to those links I have to go through and edit every one of the pages.

What I'm looking for is a way to create an insertion link to a new page that I'll call "page_links.html". I'll go through all 50 or so pages on the website and eliminate the links code and replace it with some sort of insertion code that will insert the new "page_links.html" page.

This way in the future if I want to make a change to the links group I only have to change it in one place.

I don't imagine this is anything new but I just don't do nearly enough of this stuff to know how to do this.

    Thanks for your help!

Re: Inserting a page of links

    OK

I have re-read your message now, what you need to do is create a standard menu. I always create a template page and save the code in a notepad document.

If you are reasoably happy with playing with the code <!profile=jscher2000>jscher2000<!/profile> came up with some code in <post:=592,185>post 592,185</post:>...I have adapted here for your needs

    Useful Links

Place this in a relevant place in your page.....probably a good idea to put it a primary or secondary navigation bar or the footer of the page. It will effectively open a new window sized to 200pixels wide and 400 pixels high and show your links thatyou have placed on an html page called pahe_links.html

If you have any problems copy some of your code in a text pad or txt file and I will have a look for you

    Jerry,

Thanks ! I'll work with that a bit this afternoon.

Funny you mention "standard menu". I saw that in the Composer Tools and messed with it a bit. Not knowing what I was doing though I didn't get any results.

Thanks........I'll let you know how it goes.

Re: Inserting a page of links

    Jerry,

I gave it a try as shown below. Look at the last few lines of the code. I deleted a good bit of code to post this so no need to get into anything that doesn't look right. I just wanted to give you an idea of where I placed this. In the actual code there is a good bit that takes place below the bottom of this and above as well.

The results were as though I just put a link to "page_links.html". "Useful link" came up as the link text. Clicking on it took me to "page_links.html".

Re: Inserting a page of links

    Firstly

My apologies as I "borrowed" your html from your site to let me work on this. I have used a file called a library file which basically your list of links. It has a lbi file extension. You can treat this like an html file. It contains just the html required for just the table. The html inserts itself in the main file...you will have to look at the code to get an understanding on how it works..look for:

which is where it is inserted

Re: Inserting a page of links

    Jerry,

No problem at all..........I really appreciate your trying to help with this.

I'm afraid I don't understand the code though. I looked at your file and it has the link insert code before and after my link table.

I deleted the link table and uploaded the file and the menu.lbi file, but then the links didn't show up.

You can see what I uploaded at : http://www.curvedmouldings.com/index-library.html

I know this can get to be a time consuming pain in the butt, so if my ignorance on the issue is too substantial to get us to a conclusion please say so and spend your time where it will be more productive!!!!!

    Thanks,
    BH Davis

Re: Inserting a page of links

    Hi there

So maybe it is late but we may be getting our wires crossed. Can I clarify.

    1) As you currently have it, you have a series of useful links to various sites and pages. Do you want a method that will update the links throughout your website by changing just one file or

    2) Just to have a link set somewhere in your page that says "Useful Links" and it takes you to page_links.html

If I can clarify that then we may get a result as I have made both these suggestions <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Re: Inserting a page of links

    Jerry,

It is the former as versus the latter.

If you brosweed through the website you would find my group of 10 blue links to pages within the website on almost every page. That's two rows of 5 each. I believe you correctly homed in on that earlier.

Right now if I want to add an 11th link to a new page within the website I have to go to all 50 pages and add the 11th link to all of them.

I would like each of the 50 pages to have no links table directly in their code (eliminate the links table) and rather have code that draws ONE file ("page_links") into that location on each page.

That way I can make one change in the "page_links" code / table and it will show up throughout the website. Instead of spending a few hours modifying 50 webpages, in just a few minutes I can modify one, and all 50 will change automatically (by pulling in the "new" page_links file).

I still want the 10 blue links to show up on each webpage exactly as it does now. I don't want a link to a links page.........that would be simple to create but not convenient for folks visiting the site.

I hope that I've explained it a little better this time.

    Thanks,
    BH Davis

Re: Inserting a page of links

How about using an <iframe> in your documents? I fear that Google probably can't follow them, but they resolve all the other issues. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

If you have a site map linked from your home page, Google could index off of that...

    Hi again

Jeff is right, I could </iframe></center>

use the menu.htm file I created in the earlier post. All you do now, once you have inserted this in your pages is to just change the menu.htm file.

Re: Inserting a page of links

Hey, this is great.....we're making headway.

The last suggested code works as intended.......just one minor glitch.

    Go to:

    http://www.curvedmouldings.com/index_frames.html

and click on any of the first set of links (just below the first photo and above "Recognition and Downloads").

The links are operational but they open the linked page in the frame instead of replacing the entire page.

I don't have much experience with frames so imageine there is a simple fix.

Thanks both of you for persisting with this. If I can ever help you with any woodworking issues please ask!

Re: Inserting a page of links

Ooops, not a problem, we just get the pages to open in the _parent window, an example of the link would look like this:

    <a href="curves.html" target="_parent">

To make life easier for you I have rewritten the menu.htm and added it to this post in zip format <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16>
