    Index by Section (Word 2003 SP2)

    If you wanted to index a document by each section, how would you do it?
    I'm composing a cookbook and want an Index at the end divided by sections (Appetizers, Main Courses, etc.)

    Thank you.

    Re: Index by Section (Word 2003 SP2)

    When you insert an index entry, you create a field that looks like this:

    { XE "Word" }

    You can insert an f switch identifying the section, for example

    { XE "Word" f "3" }

    to identify section 3. The identifier is arbitrary (text or number or a combination), but if you use the section number, it is easy to recognize. Unfortunately, you have to insert the switch manually.

    When you insert the index at the end of a section, it'll display an error message. Don't worry! Right-click the index and select Toggle Field Codes from the popup menu. You'll see something like

    { INDEX e " " c "2" z "1033" }

    The actual field switches may vary - in this example, e specifies the character(s) separating the entry and the page number, c specifies the number of columns in the index, and z specifies the language (1033 = US English). Add an f switch to specify which index entries you want to include:

    { INDEX e " " c "2" z "1033" f "3" }

    Then press F9 to hide field codes and to update the index. You should now only see the entries that have an f "3" switch.

    Thanks for your reply, Hans. I'm not sure I understand your explanation. (My name is "Novice" after all.)
    I have used the Insert > Reference > TOC and Index feature on my Toolbar. This feature allows me to mark each entry (recipe title) that I want to place in my Index. Now, where would I place the "c 2" entry to designate the section?

    I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that. The index entry fields are formatted as hidden text. In order to see them, tick the check box labeled "Hidden text" in the View tab of Tools | Options..., then click OK. You should now see items resembling

    { XE "SomeWord" }

    in your text. These are the indeX Entry fields. (The brackets { } are field brackets, you shouldn't type them yourself)
