List name being used (Word 03 SP2)

I am trying to modify a the heading numbering. I have named the list. Now when ever I try to make even the smallest change I get an error message. "The list name is already being used. Please choose another one." It won't even let me change the font.
I want to edit the list I am using not create an entirely new list.
What have I done wrong?

Is this in VBA? If so, what code are you using?
Otherwise, how have you named the list and how are you trying to edit it?

Apparently it was some problem with Word. When I rebooted this morning the problem was gone. Sorry to have botheres you.

BTW: I was just making the changes in the dialog box. I was not using VBA.
