    Remove apps from startup?

    Hi,
My wife has made a lot of downloads on her laptop and a lot of these apps have added themselves to the startup sequence and added to the task bar tray. I want to clean out the startup sequence as the laptop takes about 3 minutes just to startup and load all these apps that range from screensavers to antivirus apps etc. Where do i go to not delete the programs but remove them from the startup sequence. I find it not necessary that all these several apps have to activate in the startup!!!

    TIA
    Regards,
    Rudi

For a manual procedure, you must look in 4 places: two folders in Windows Explorer:

    Cocuments and SettingsAll UsersStart MenuProgramsStartup
    Cocuments and Settings<username>Start MenuProgramsStartup

and two registry locations in RegeEdit:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionRun
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionRun

Delete the items you don't want.

Is SpyBot Search & Destroy installed on the laptop? If so, open it and activate the Tools section, then click System Startup. Disabling a startup item is as easy as clearing a check box.

For a very complete overview, use Autoruns (free).

You should! See Anti Adware, Spyware, Hijack for links.

In addition to what Hans said, I would also run a registry cleaner.

Although XP is much better than previous OS, as the computer is modified with programs (installed and uninstalled), there are always setting fragments left in the registry - letting the registry get bloated. The entire registry is read every time the computer is booted.

Granted, there has to be A LOT of activity to really additional slowdown, but cleaning the registry periodically also helps get rid of vendors who like to leave fragments for "Future" purposes.

Windows XP program startup locations gives a good rundown on all the places to look.

TuneUp Utilities 2006 (for money) or Ccleaner (for free) can also help you to identify and remove unnecessary startup applications
