Selecting and typing over old text (2003 (11.8026.5036) SP2)

I have been noticing that when I highlighted text that I want to type over the next text does not replace the old text. The old text simply gets shifted to the right of the new text that I typed. Shouldn't the highlighted text be typed over by the new text?

What do I need to look into to fix the problem?

If, in Tools/Option/Edit, there is a check mark next to Overtype mode, uncheck. If it is checked, the status bar will show OVR in black type.

    Hope this helps,

Check the "Typing Replaces Selection" setting. In earlier versions of Word, it was was under Tools>Options..., on the Edit tab. I don't have 2003 handy to check there.

You can also double click OVR in the status bar. If the text OVR is gray, overtype mode is off, if it is black, overtype is on.
