    Did you use Ctrl+Alt+R and Ctrl+Alt+T to enter the symbols in the dialog? It works for me in Word 2003.
    Anyhow, try entering <code>^0174</code> in the Find whar box, and <code>^0153</code> in the Replace with box.

    Perhaps it has been entered using Insert | Symbol. Could you attach a small sample document? You can remove all (or almost all) text except for some of the troublesome

    Thanks Hans, the symbol font was the key. Installing and running the Find Symbol macro solved the problem.
