How best to answer posts

What is the best or proper way to answer posts? Do I answer each one individually so that the poster knows I replied or answer all replies thus far by incorporating them all in one post? Do loungers generally come back and read the whole thread or just a reply to their post? Is there a "best practice" in responding to posts? I sure like to make things complicated for myself, don't I?

I feel <!rule=07>Rule 07<!/rule> covers it nicely. There have been times when a couple of Loungers had a habit of replying to each and every person that responded and it got very tiring even as a normal user ( it must have been hell for the Mods and Admin).

I normally take it in context to the post and reply to the most topical response, or wait a turn and then reply to the next person,, kind of "leap frogging" as this sometimes helps if the other person makes a good point.

Hi Jerry,

Thanks for the pointer! I did read that Rule a very long time ago but I had forgotten it! Generally, I have consolidated my replies to one post but I always dither about whom I should reply to so that the others see my post!
Guess I'll go get my and cogitate about it for a bit!

I also try to consolidate in one post what might normally require two or more. I usually try to name the persons in separate paragraphs to try to make it easier to read.

i just want to point out that I generally take longer to check a thread i've posted on if i haven't gotten a lounge email saying someone responded to my post. if you consolidated 2 replies with one diercted towards me, but you didn't actually reply to me, i might not put anymore input in because i would assume without even thinking about it that i haven't been responded to.

this is all assuming you wanted my input in the first place

i know, i know... never assume

Yeah, that's a very interesting and valid point, John, and probably my main hesitation when I have occasion to do it. But, like Jezza, I think it gets a bit tiring when going through a thread to read several posts in succession making replies to different people. I usually do it with my fingers crossed that even though many people rely on Lounge email notices, that most people would check the thread anyway just to "keep up" with the topic. In any case, it doesn't really happen all that often.

Yes, I did want to hear your opinion! And it is for the reason that you state that I "worry" about how to reply! Some posters don't read the thread clear through to see all the replies and I feel very certain that they can sometimes miss answers to their posts! for your input!

Re: How best to answer posts

An all-encompassing response to one of many posts is the downfall of my prefered method of reading the lounge (threaded). I take out rubber end darts and throw them at the monitor when I can't find the answer (or question) to what I'm reading!!

Argh!!

Seriously though, it's not that big of a deal - I normally read all the posts in the threads I'm interested in anyways.

Re: How best to answer posts

ironic that the situation would come up in the post the concerns the topic so i'll try it out and hopefully skitter sees the reply to her post!

bigal: it really depends on how active i am in the lounge at any given time anyway. if i'm spending a good amount of time i don't need the replies, its only when i'm not in the lounge that i rely on the email notifications. so maybe 25% of the time, its possible that it could happen - but only a fraction of that 25% does a multiple response post happen anyway for me. So like you said, it doesn't really happen that often.

Re: How best to answer posts

Just for you I'll specifically answer your post! One of those darts may make it through and that would hurt - rubber ended or not! Probably the place multiple responses happen most is in Puzzles, Test, or Scuttlebutt. IMHO The more serious threads really would need individual answers most times because of the specific questions that are being asked and answered. I admit though that I have struggled with this problem probably way more than I should!

I see your answer because I do read the entire thread! I always did when I was on dial-up even though it took time because I was afraid I'd miss something! And now that I am on cable, it is really easy to do! And yes, you are certainly welcome!

Re: How best to answer posts

FWIW - I like consolidating responses if they make sense, as long as the post does not get to long. Then I like to break them up in reasonable, readable lengths as defined by whom - personal choice

If the post was important, I may post a quick message to that person referring to the post with detailed answer (they are small, fast loading and easily ignored by others). I tend to do this only if there HAVE been a lot of posts and I need to respond to several people. I may leave out certain people receiving individual posts who I would know read EVERY post. The exception would be an acknowledgement for the answers to my problems.
(Loungers for example would be Big AL, Hans, etc).

On other boards (like this one), with private e-mail can be sent, I will send an e-mail with the post reference and make sure the people are referenced in the e-mail (as suggested by Big Al earlier).
