Online favicon generator

I have added it to this forum as I thought it more likely that we developers would be looking for this type of service

I was dwelling on the idea of creating a favicon for my website and grumbling about the idea of downloading yet another piece of software when I came across this site:

FavIcon from Pics I generated one from a jpeg file and it rendered it beautifully. It creates a 32x32 ico file. I have added mine to the bottom as a bmp file so you can view the quality.

Jezza, I am surprised that you would be posting "Nauti-lus" pictures here in the Lounge.

Seriously though thanks for the info I will try this one out. I have been playing around with Image2Ico with good results.

I had to play around with the source image when I was testing it as it got a tad upset with the physical memory size of the file, but after a few attempts worked fine.

The picture seems to have been translated somewhat to the top left?

Yes but only because I cut it out from the larger background image to make it square so that it would not distort in the conversion process...I have a cropping tool in Fireworks...so that is me not the convertor

Can you make the white background transparent?

Does this do anything that you can't do just as (more) easily by opening the image in Irfanview, Resizing and then Saving As as an ICO file type?

That is fine but as I pointed out in my original post:

"grumbling about the idea of downloading yet another piece of software" - I don't use irfanview and don't plan to, I use Macromedia Fireworks which does not support ICO. Thi sis the application of my choice. My introduction to this site is purely for Loungers to have a nice alternative.

Fair enough.

I was actually genuinely interested in whether there is to more to than that.
Is an ICO file just a bmp with the extension changed?

Although .ico and .bmp are closely related, a .ico file may contain a mask bitmap in addition to the picture bitmap. The mask bitmap defines the transparent region of the icon. If you rename a .bmp file to .ico, it'll work as an icon, but since it doesn't contain a mask bitmap, it won't have a transparent part.

No, although it is commonly said that an ico file is a BMP, this is not true. An ICO file as a repository of BMP images. It has its own format and cannot be created by changing the file extension of a 16 x 16 or 32 x 32 bmp file. Similar to not being able to change a jpg to gif by extension change, it has to be done at application level

Re: Online favicon generator

Thanks for that.

So ICO files also need to be exactly 16 x 16 or 32 X 32 as well? Or only when used as Favicons?

I did actually go to the site and made a favicon and used it, then wondered whether this was any different from doing the job with Irfanview.
I just saved a file as an ICO in IrfanView (without resizing) and it happily left the size at 110 x 110. So I presume I need to specify the size myself.
