problem w Desktop (XP with SP2)

    Hello,

on only one of my five accounts on my XP system (w service pack 2), I have the following problem:
when I try to create a new folder, shortcut, or whatever on the Desktop, I receive the following error box:

Title bar: Unable to create folder
    Content of error box:
unable to create the folder 'New Folder'
    the specified path is invalid.

The problem account is the default Administrator account established when I first installed XP.

    Many thanks for your help,
    Majac777

    Welcome to the Lounge!

To solve your problem, check permissions for Desktop folders:

    - Login as Administrator
    - Open Windows Explorer (or My Computer)
    - Navigate to Cocuments and SettingsAdministrator
    - Right-click Desktop folder and from pop-up menu select Properties
    - On Desktop Properties window click Security tab
    - Make sure you have all permissions ("Allow" checkbox is checked) for Administrartor account
    - Click OK to close Properties window
    - Then navigate to Cocuments and SettingsAll Users
    - Repeat the steps above for Desktop folder.

Then double-click (open) Desktop folder and try to create a new folder or a shortcut.

Re: problem w Desktop (XP with SP2)

Same deal in Safe Mode. I did note that the desktop icons in the Administrator account are soley the Desktop icons from "..../Documents and Setting/All Users/Desktop".
I also noted when logged in to Administrator account, and using Windows Explorer to view "..../Documents and Setting/Administrator/Desktop" -- I saw the other folders and icons that SHOULD appear on the Desktop, but do not appear. Also, I can add folders and perform all normal file and folder functions--as long as I do it via Windows Explorer. So why don't my Desktop folders/icons appear on the Desktop?

BTW, I did all of what you guys suggested as above..and I greatly appreciate your input. Thanks!

Ok. How are you attempting to create these desktop shortcuts ??

If you right-click on the desktop and select New>Shortcut are you presented with this dialogue box ?? If not, what are you doing and what happens ??

Re: problem w Desktop (XP with SP2)

If the items from AdministratorDesktop do not appear on the desktop, that means it is not the desktop folder for the account you login to.

To make sure which folder is Desktop folder for the account you login to, open Registry Editor (click Start | Run, type REGEDIT and hit Enter) and navigate to

    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionExplorerShell Folders

then look at the path under Desktop key.
If the path is different than Cocuments and SettingsAdministratorDesktop, open this folder in Windows Explorer and check folder permissions.

Also it is possible somebody lock the active desktop for this account.
    Login as Administrator,
    - right-click an empty space anywhere on the desktop (ie not an icon),
    - from pop-up menu select Properties,
    - then click Desktop tab,
    - click Customize Desktop button,
    - on the next ("Desktop Items") window click Web tab,
    - make sure that "Lock desktop items" checkbox is unchecked.

Re: problem w Desktop (XP with SP2)

Hello, just got back from vacation. Still unable to solve Desktop problem. No problems with the items mentioned in the above reply; the registry entry within: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionExplorerShell Folders -- is: Cocuments and SettingsAdministratorDesktop as it should be. Also, the "Lock desktop items" checkbox is unchecked. Now, when i log in with a different (and working) admin acct....and then use Explore All Users to click on the ...Documents and SettingsAdministrator folder (which BTW is the only folder here of five users that does not have a [+] symbol); i get an error box saying "Cocuments and SettingsAdministrator is not accessible. Access is denied". Sorry, but I'm stymied.

    Thanks again for y'alls input.
    Regards, Majac777

From an account with Administrator rights you are able to access any folder or file on your computer.

To override "access denied" restriction, follow the procedure described in MSKB 308421:
How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP

Re: problem w Desktop (XP with SP2)

Thanks, I printed to article and will give it a try when I get back from dinner. BTW, could it just be that the "Adminstrator" account is corrupt? I'm wondering if as a last resort I can delete the "Administrator" account after first creating another one and copying all files, folders, settings, etc. just prior to deleting "Administrator"...all without screwing up Win XP? What do you think?

Regards, and thanks again for your reply,

I would think that if you copied all files and folders from a corrupt account to create a new account, that you would simply be creating a new corrupt account. It sounds like a permissions issue. Try the suggested MSKB article.
