Black 'Bar' Around Window (5.1/Service Pack 2)

My window no longer takes up the whole screen -- and I'm pretty sure it did before. I seem to have a black "bar" all the way around whatever is open -- desktop, or any application. It's a good half-inch wide on the left, right, and bottom, and a bit less than that on the top. I can't drag the corners of the window to make it fill up the screen again. Can you help? Or has it always been this way, and I just didn't notice before?! Thanks.

Have you changed the screen resolution or "adjusted" any of the controls on the monitor itself ???

I'm not the only one using this computer, so I can't be sure. I'd already checked the screen resolution, but hadn't thought about adjusting the monitor itself. Guess what? That worked! Thank you so much, Doc! Once again, Woody's Lounge and its knowledgeable and helpful denizens came through, and in lightning-quick time!
