uninstalled program files

A friend had a UPS program which had a data base of his customers. He uninstalled the program from an old computer. Now he has installed the program on a new computer but never backed up the data base. Is there any way to recover or restore a data base that was uninstalled as part of the overall program.

    Re: uninstalled program files

It may be possible to recover the deleted database files..... IF after deleting the program along with those files he didn't do much of anything thereafter on the computer which would then overwrite those files on the disk.

No doubt, some of the members here could recommend one of the several free or shareware applications which could be used to recover those files. But again, the key to recovering deleted files is that no or very little HDD activity took place immediately after their deletion.

This really depends on the software and where the database was installed. He needs to determine where the database was installed to see if the database is still there.

Can he create a new database on the new computer and see where it is located ? Then he can check the old computer. Since this was UPS software, check to see if the database was loaded on the UPS WebSite under a UserID.

Remember that the program was uninstalled, not deleted. Is there a restoration program that will help restore files that were uninstalled rather than deleted?

As far as I know it doesn't make any difference how the files were removed. The files were written to the disk and thus are still there regardless UNLESS the space they occupied is overwritten (used) by new data.

    Re: uninstalled program files

Uninstalling a program DOES delete files, subdirectories, and modifies the registry. Yes there are programs to undelete files - a simple Google search here reveals numerous suggestions. Other Loungers will probably provide some alternatives (I used Norton System Utilites, but other utilities are out there).

In my earlier post, I suggested finding the place of the database on the new computer because the database MIGHT still be on the old computer if it was placed in a "common" area (Cocuments and Settings%user profile%Application Data, C:Program FilesCommon Files, etc)

Jeff is correct in that if there is HDD activity, you may NOT be able to restore trhe old program because the deleted files will be overwritten with "New" data.

With XP, if you have a restore point or use a utility that automatically takes a picture of the harddrive before and after the installation - yes you can "Restore". The only other method is if your friend made a backup of the hard drive with the UPS software and database BEFORE uninstalling the software.

I think you will find that a Restore Point saves the files regarded as (XP) System Files, not any user data files... (If that's what you were saying!)

This is one of those cases where you HOPE the un-installation routine was "sloppy" in its housekeeping and DIDN'T remove or delete the database! For that reason, I think you should look in to Scott's recommendation to see if the old database may still be there, in spite of the program removal.

    Re: uninstalled program files

As a further suggestion, check with UPS, and see what their uninstall routine does. It is possible, that the addressbook for the customers is simply sitting on the hard drive in it's proper location. We use various packages at work, that when uninstalled, will leave the user data untouched. It will also ask if they should be used again, if the package were to be re-installed on the same PC.

    Re: Problem Solved

Mission accomplished - turns out that my friend had not uninstalled the UPS program. So I was able to find and copy the database and move it to the new computer. All is working. Thanks for your help.
