Wireless connection but no Internet

I recently went over to Broadband and have had a great, problem free time for about 2 weeks. Jezzarette 2, in her wisdom, tripped over the RJ11 extension cable and snapped it in half. I thought this a great chance to go to wireless and so today, purchased a card for the laptop and a USB bluetooth widget for the main PC. All was well, I had connected to the router and wa surfing at great speed around the internet. A queue was forming at the computer so I decided to give it a break and so logged off and then switched to J2 account.

I then found that J2 could not log on to the internet. A quick check showed we had connection to the Router but could not get the home page on the browser. The only thing I did was get rid of the old ADSL dial up connections in Start|Connect to..

I have logged into the router and all my connections to my ADSL provider are there...any ideas?

I would start by looking at the software installation for the "USB Bluetooth widget", to see if this was installed for All Users. Sometimes software like this only works for Administrators, on other occassions I have had great success by promoting the user account to Administrator, logging in and getting all the software working and then removing the Administrator rights again.

Hi Stuart

Sorry I wasn't clear, I have lost the connection for all of us, even my account as Administrator. I re-installed the USB widget thinking I may get a connection but no joy. I was trying the network connections wizard but again no joy

I guess we need a better description of your network setup then.

Exactly what is a "USB Bluetooth widget" and what did you have to do to get it working in the first place?

Re: Wireless connection but no Internet

Hi Stuart

Not my area of strength.

1) Connected Router (Netgear ADSL Modem Wireless Router) to phone socket
2) Plugged into router with Cat 5 and logged onto it and set up the WEP and connections including IP Addresses of authorised PC/Laptops and Ipaqs. Logged Out
3) Went to main PC at top of the house and installed the USB Bluetooth network Adapter

Once connected and working I went into the settings and searched the local area for my router, got a connection and WEP approval and was away.

All was working well up to the point where I removed the old ADSL dial up. I can connect to the router, just cannot get passed there as IE and Firefox state they cannot find the pages.

Re: Wireless connection but no Internet

I take it all back Stuart

During the past few posts I was connected directly into the phone line and had switched off the router. In desperation I plugged it all back in and then logged into the router with the laptop and although it said it was connected, it clearly wasn't as I could not access the internet. I pressed"Connect" again and it fired up.

I am now back on the main PC writing this. Sorry for the nuisance and thank you for your help.....School is back tomorrow and the homework statrs and the internet is needed

Jezza,

No sweat, thanks for letting us know. The one thing that I am still confused about is the reference to a "USB Bluetooth network Adapter". The rest of your description appears to be describing a standard 802.11g wireless network, so where on earth does Bluetooth come into it?

Re: Wireless connection but no Internet

I'm still confused. I have searched the Netgear web site for a reference to bluetooth, but all I found was this. Your picture looks a bit like one of these Netgear 802.11g wireless adapters. This is NOT a bluetooth device.

What is the model number or part number of your adapter?
