    Numbering Styles (2003)

    I apologise in advance for asking stupid questions - and asking questions that have probably been asked before.

    Am creating the normal.dot template for Word 2003.

    Wish to create 3 separate numbering sets.

    Numbering set 1 - 1, 1.1, (a), (i), (A), (I), 1, a), i) - indents at 1.5 cm increments - levels 1 and 2 are headings

    Numbering set 2 - full legal numbering - 1, 1.1, 1.1.1, 1.1.1.1, 1.1.1.1.1, 1.1.1.1.1.1, 1.1.1.1.1.1.1, 1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1, 1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1 - indents at 1.5, 3 and 4.5cm - level 1 is heading

    Numbering set 3 - 1, (a), (i), (A), (I), 1, a), i), A) - indents at 1.5 cm increments - level 1 is heading

    Questions:
    1. Can I do all this in one template?
    2. Do I have to create 27 separate styles for the numbering - and separate styles for the follow on paragraphs?
    3. Can I stop the users from being able to change any part of the numbering?

    Any help is most appreciated.

    As far as I can tell:

    1) Yes.
    2) 27 styles: yes. Follow-on styles: depends on what you want; perhaps a single follow-on style will do, otherwise a single set of follow-on styles.
    3) You could protect the document.

    The only problem with the numbering system set up on this site is that I do not wish to use the inbuilt Heading styles for 2 of the numbering sets.

    The Heading series will only take one (out of the seven) of the outline number gallery positions. The same principles can be applied to assign other gallery positions to other style series. Three separate series that you have described only take up three of these gallery positions.

    Effectively, the numbered style gallery for outline numbering gives you seven times nine possible numbered styles - and that is before you start using vba code to create and apply other lists.
