store template locations in a document (word97-2003)

    Hi guys,

I have a reporting system (only used in emergencies -- long story) based around word mailmerges and templates containing autotext.

I want to keep the "master " version on a cd or key, and copy this to users PCs if the awful happens and we need to use it. (The awful includes loss of networking)

    My question is...

Is there any way to store the template location path as relative to the document, so that installation would only involve copying a folder (and subfolders) to user pcs. (does that make sense...)

Word always stores the absolute template path, but it searches several folders to find the template associated with a document if it isn't available at the location specified in the document.

    - The folder containing the document.
    - The user templates folder as specified in the File Locations tab of Tools | Options.
    - The workgroup templates path as specified in the File Locations tab of Tools | Options
    - The Templates folder under C:Program FilesMicrosoft Office.

So if you place the template and documents in the same folder, Word can always find the template. Or copy the template to the user template folder.

Thanks Hans, that seems to have done the trick.

Storing the template in the same directory as the files I mean...
