    Minimum Operation (XP Home sp2)

In order to get the maximun performance, I would like to use my computer at times when I am doing video editing without most of the files that normally start up. I quess this could be done by setting 2 different profiles, but I would prefer to not have to go thru the selection routine each time I power up my computer.

Is there an alternative to switch to the minimum settings only when I want to?

I do not understand your question. You want to create two hardware profiles: one is "normal", the other with minimum autostart programs and services (that's what you mean by "files", I guess) - this is easy to achieve. Than you said you don't want the menu to show up (set the display time to 0 seconds), which is legitimate. Then you want to boot the computer to another hardware profile from the first one without restarting, is it correct?
Such scenario will not work - you must to restart your computer to boot to different hardware profile. You can set menu display time to 1 or 2 seconds instead and choose the second profile very quickly when you want to do so.

I like your suggestion on the display time but would recommend 5 seconds as a safe numbr. Otherwise you are not going to have much time to select the other profile.

BTB - i had accidently set the display time to zero - which of course meant I effectively had only ONE boot option ! <img src=/S/bash.gif border=0 alt=bash width=35 height=39>
