Cannot access macros or VBA code (Windows XP/SP2 Excel 2003)

In a workbook that I have been building for over a decade, I suddenly have lost all ability to access or enter any VBA code. If I enter the development environment directly (Alt-F11), any attempt to open projects listed in the Project Pane results in a small window titled Project Locked and stating "Project is unviewable". If I attempt code access via the Tools, Macro, Macros route, the Macro dialog box lets me select and run existing macros, but all but the Run and Cancel buttons are grayed out.

To my knowledge I have nothing protected, and Tools, Protection gets me a list where all but the last item (Protect Shared Workbook...) are grayed out. What do I need to do to get my normal VBA development environment back?

    Thank you, John Littell

Does the title bar of the workbook (or of the Excel window if the workbook is maximized) have [Shared] after the file name? If so, your workbook has become shared, perhaps inadvertently. See if you can "unshare" it using Tools | Share Workbook...

Re: Cannot access macros or VBA code (Windows XP/S

[Shared] does Not appear in the title bar. However, your solution is correct. I went into Tools, Share Workbook and found the "Allow changes to more than one user at the same time" check box to be checked. I unchecked and now have my development environment back.

    Thank you,

    Have you made a backup of the workbook yet? <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    Legare,
I have backed it up daily for ten years. Please explain the reason for your question.

(Sorry this reply took so long. Woody's Lounge seems to have been down.)

Since you were taking time to ask here about recovering the workbook instead of just going to the backup copy, it sounded like you didn't have a backup. I just wanted to emphasize to everyone who reads the thread how important frequent backups are.

And yes, the Lounge was down for almost 24 hours - see <post:=597,140>post 597,140</post:>.
