Mouse can't select text (MSO 2003)

Within my e-mail (view) widow,, I can click and then sselect text using the kkeyboard, but I cannot click and then sect text by dragging the mouse.

What might this be? I don't recall this being the case, and my "troubleshooter" tells me my IIntellipoint software is working correctly.

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

Can you select text in another application? Have you tried re-booting? Are you trying to select text from some embedded object?

    Joe:

The only app that is (seemingly) affected is the Outlook message view.

Did you check Joe's last question?

Do you use Word as your editor?

Re: Mouse can't select text (MSO 2003)

    Joe/John:

    1) This appears to happen ONLY in HTML format and ONLY in the Compose window. NOT text formats.

    2) It is text that I am typing, not embedded.

    3) I have uninstalled and re-installed my Ipoint 5.5 software, to no avail.

    4) I do NOT use Word as my editor.

I do not recall this being the case until recently.

    Regards,
    Chuck

Well then what else have you changed? Have you tried Outlook Help | Detect and repair?

    Joe:

Geez, I dunno what the heck I might've changed, since I'm not really clear on exactly when the problem started.

    Detect/Repair didn't change anything.

I guess I could always re-install if I needed to do so... I think I was first just checking to make sure I was right that you were supposed to be able to drag/select text in your Compose window.

    Joe:

I have some memory of some setting I saw for allow/not allow text selection via the keyboard...

But I can't check when I cannot remember where the heck it was... But that wouldn't cause an issue that only affects the Compose window, would it?

I've noticed that sometimes heavily formatted text that is pasted in becomes resistant to editing. Even selecting it all and pressing Delete does nothing. I don't really understand this, but it's a reminder that Outlook's message compose window is not a good HTML editor.

If you right-click and View>Source, can you see anything strange about the text you can't select?

What happens if you use Word as your e-mail editor? I know that some people say never use Word as your e-mail editor but I use it at work & home without any problems. BTW, if you plan to upgrade to Office 2007 you won't have a choice - Word is the only e-mail editor.

Re: Mouse can't select text (MSO 2003)

There are drag and drop options in Word and Excel which can be toggled on and off, but I haven't tested if they affect other Office programs. (There are a couple of options in Word that do cascade settings through all MS apps, though I can't name one off the top of my head.)

    Not apparently...

Do you see something I don't?

    Jefferson:

    1) This is NOT a new stationary template;
    2) I just went through, since the original had been created in Outlook, and, using a notepad editor, cleaned out all the "extraneous" code that I saw;

Same result in the Compose window.

But has anyone else actually confirmed that what I'm asking is even valid -- i.e., that if you are composing an HTML formatted e-mail, that you CAN in fact select the text with the mouse?

Chuck, you should be able to select text you just typed yourself. No idea what's wrong with your Outlook. Are you still running the IE6 for Windows XP SP2? Just want to rule out any possible "other IE" interactions.

No, I'm using IE7... but the selection process works fine in the browser itself.
