This is a tall order and by the tone of the question it appears you are new to this....I apologise if I am wrong. Questions to ask and get answers.

    1) How many people in the company
    2) How Workstations in the company
    3) Do they have satellite offices
    4) What is the network capacity of the company
    5) Do they want document management systems implemented
    6) Do they want integration with third party applications
    7) Do they want content management
    8) Do they want work flow management
    9) Do they want customer relationship management software
    .........

There are too many questions to ask here, what are your web skills like, how much money have they got to spend, have you got those skills...........

    Re: Intranet -Design

A quick Google on <code>'Build your own Intranet'</code> brings up numerous hits, one of the first being this article:

Build or Buy your own Intranet software?

It starts off with a list of requirements that YOU will have to provide. Can you answer yes to all the questions? - if not, perhaps you ought to be looking at sub-contracting the job out.

I don't really think it is something you should attempt on the basis of learning each skill required as you go along.

Thanks for your replies, I am knew to this.... I am going to do this project for my final year project at Uni,,, but it is for a real client the deadline for the project is may 2007. Leif , I had a look at the link, I can do everything apart from: Hopefully I will learn a few things in the implemenation process....
A working knowledge of the pitfalls and tradeoff of the various Web Servers available, and how to fit them into your business' network and information processing policies and expectations.
A working knowledge of CGI scripting in Perl, C, C++ and the ability to write custom scripts for the needs of your department or business
A working knowledge of database accessing with vendor-specific Database APIs like Microsoft ISAPI or Spry BGI

Hopefully I will learn a few things in the implemenation process....

    Thanks

    Re: Intranet -Design

Since you're new to the whole thing, my advice would be to go with a Content Management System (CMS). Essentially this is a bit of software that does the design and build for you and lets you concentrate on the content.

In terms of web servers, there are two big players: Microsoft and Apache. Apache is (IMHO) by far the better and more versatile of the two. Usually Apache servers run un Linux-based machines, but they can run on pretty much any operating system (I have a virtual Apache server running on my Windows XP laptop). The CMS I would recommend is Joomla. I use that for my personal web site, and it's what my organisation uses for its intranet and internet sites.

The easiest way to run a (virtual or otherwise) Apache server is to download and install XAMPP. Joomla is available for download at Joomla.

They are all <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> of charge. If you were looking to create an internet site you'd need to find a host that runs PHP and MySQL, but for an intranet all you need is a computer that you can leave switched on.

joomla 1.0.11 is the latest full package and you will find all you need to know about joomla in the forums, especially the FAQs if you are new to joomla. Joomla will do all that you require for an intranet and much more. I also recommend that you go the apache route.

A link to Joomla would be helpful to those you are expecting to help you - see <!help=19>Help 19<!/help> and/or <post#=98,472>post 98,472</post#>.

Right below the download button there is a link to a tutorial book. Did you follow that?
