    Protected Subtotal List (2000 (SR-1))

I've got a worksheet with a subtotal list. The worksheet is protected. Because of the protection, the user cannot click on the '+' or '-' signs to expand or collapse the the rows. Is there any way that VBA code could temporarily unprotect the sheet when a button for the subtotal list is clicked?
