Re: Firefox 2 Beta 2 (IE 6.0 SP1)

Although Firefox 2.0 has some nice changes compared with 1.5.0.6, they aren't so compelling that I want to jump ahead of the completion of testing. Note that the first "RC" (Release Candidate") release is scheduled for September 19th. This might be a better choice for most users than a beta. (The final release of Fx2 was due before the end of September according to the more general "roadmap," but given the timing of RC1, perhaps it will be in October.)

FWIW - I agree with Jefferson on this one.

I did download the new version on my "Test" computer and deleted it within a few hours. I did not see anything new that significantly changed how I am using FireFox (I also had several glitches that caused the computer to hang - which may or may not have been the Beta versions fault). New version is trying to allow user new ways to organize data being received on the web. I plan to wait fro the first release to re-try.

Re: Firefox 2 Beta 2 (IE 6.0 SP1)

If you do decide to install Firefox 2 beta 2 then you need to do the following:

Install it in a different directory from Firefox 1.5.* as you should keep a release version available in case of problems.
Create a new profile so that you can use different profiles for each version of Firefox (you should create shortcuts for each version that automatically selects the right profile to use). Do not use your Firefox 1.5 profile with Firefox 2 as it makes changes to the profile and the profile will no longer be fully compatible with Firefox 1.5
Do your own troubleshooting - there is no official support available for beta versions.

If you need to ask how to do any of the above then do not install the beta.

To jscher 2000 and IMNet User also: No way was my intention to install the beta, I was just curious about any problems it created for it's users. I have no test machine and I can't afford to have beta programs mess up the only one I've got.

If I'm reluctant to install SP2, you know I'm more afraid of that beta. Coward is my middle name, Careful is my first one. Perhaps I should change my screen name to Careful Coward.

I wasn't aware that SP2 was Beta. I could have sworn that Microsoft fully released that.

It's not in Beta, again I didn't make myself clear. I just threw that in for effect. The long-time posters here will know exactly what I meant.

Barring the SP2 comment (I have read many of your other posts) you should be careful. I am called paranoid because I do not do automatic installs (I get the automatic notifications without auto download - otherwise, it is just manual).

This NOT a recommendation for everyone - only the way I DO THINGS ON MY MAIN COMPUTERS.
Loungers please do not me.

My test machines were cobbled from bits and pieces of systems I worked on over the years. I actually call these machines my Internet Access Devices (IAD - same acronym my company uses for Internal Audit Division - my warped sense of humor at work). I never put anything on the test machine I can not easily recover from. I have a "relatively" recent disk image backed up for easy re-installs.

Although work forced me into WFW 3.11 (which was really a DOS Application anyway) and W95, I never really embraced Non-DOS OS on my home machines until W98 !

As for SP2 - I'm the coward and will now

Both names are very discriptive, I think I like Supremely Confident ( while in my ignorance) best. I'm happy to know that I've found a brother (under the skin, that is) who will not install SP2 until forced to do so. I don't use automatic notifications, auto downloads or any other thing like that. Like you, I'm strictly manual, the only thing I like and use that's automatic is the shift gear in my Toyota.

I've been cloggered, abused and ignored because of my wishes, but I've learned to turn the other cheek and take it on the chin.
Maybe we should form a union of the maualits (new title) and fight back. What do you think of that idea?

I just made it up, you choose how to pronounce it.

I formally submit your name for President. Do I hear a second?

Since you came up with the idea - you should be President. We can start from there.

And you didn't embrace it then, either, because Windows 98 was still very firmly attached to its DOS underpinnings. Myself, I couldn't wait to get 2000 installed on my home machines to get away from the 9x series.

Re: Firefox 2 Beta 2 (IE 6.0 SP1)

W98 was still backwards compatible with DOS - but was really (or rather W98SE) MS first major attempt to build kernal outside of DOS and put DOS as an "Application" to the W98SE Kernal.

Persoanlly, I think NT4 was MS first true success in breaking the DOS mode -> 2000 -> XP Pro

I was using NT4.and 2000 through the job and associated vendors I dealt with, but could not justify it for home machine since everyone else was W95/W98 and I needed to be up on them.

FYI -I am "Upgrading" (read keeping keyboard, mouse, speakers, 17" monitor, and POSSIBLY 6GB Hard Drive while pitching the rest) my 85 Year Old Aunt's computer. The OS WILL be XP Pro. I am tired of family and friends getting on her computer "HELPING" her by changing settings, default modes, etc and then having to drop everything to go fix it. XP Pro allows me to establish profiles where everyone can have what they need and they do NOT get ADMIN privileges.

I think I will stop - poluted this thread enought for 24 hours.

Well, if you want to continue to receive security patches you'll need to install sp-2. SP-1 support ends Oct. 10, 2006. See Lifecycle Supported Service Packs.
