I can't help you with your specific problem, but if you're worried about what loads at startup, you can use the (free)utility Sysinternals Autoruns to get a comprehensive overview of startup programs and processes.

You can also check for rootkits, for example using the (free) tool Sophos Anti-Rootkit.

Is this a home or work PC? Is is networked? If you want to build a powerful debugging CD look at Bart's Preinstalled Environment (BartPE) bootable live windows CD/DVD.

    Steve,
Have you tried loading Task Manager, selecting the processes tab and watching what is using the CPU when you try and start Word/Excel?
I assume you have done the usual defragmentation, clearing out temp files and checking you have enough free space on the C drive?
Also, you didn't mention what AV/Firewall you use, but they themselves can be causes of slowdown - see, for example, this test and particularly the results.

    Re: Colourful Delusion??

Sorry for the delay in responding - work's been really busiy over the past few days. Thanks for the heads-up to the BartPE application, Joe. What an extremely useful and elegant approach to troubleshooting. I spent some time downloading some of the plugins I thought would be useful and burned a bootable CD very easily. I've not had a chance to do any serious digging yet but initial tests show it not to be related to a virus and the AdAware scan comes up clean. I'm looking for a plugin that will search out rootkits and one that looks for Trojans, (if that's possible) .

I still, however, get the coloured flashes when I boot from CD, which suggests I'm fixating on nothing or there's something in BIOS that's causing it. The mobo is fairly old now, (its a K7S5A from ECS) and, last time I looked, I was using the most recent BIOS. I may downgrade to the previous version to see if this makes a difference.

    Still digging...
    Regards,

    Steve
