Freeze-up just before login (WinXP Pro SP2)

Hi All,
My niece just gave me her Compaq Presario R3000 laptop to try and fix. As far as I know, she is up-to-date on patches and certainly onto SP2. This past Saturday, as she was starting windows, just as she clicked into the Password box (her computer is password protected, but not a part of any university vlan), the computer froze. She said she tried it twice more with the same results. She brought it to me yesterday. I tried it both normally and into safe mode. Twice again the same result.
I have just phoned her to bring me the laptop's disks and while I'm waiting I've got a "give-me-guidance" question.
I'm assuming my next step should be to try and repair her windows installation.
Other than a re-installation yet, if this does not work, what would the next step be.....what do I need to prepare for?
Thanks.

Actaully - I have a follow on question for the Loungers because I can not remember if this feature is in XP Pro (I think so but not sure) ...

W98SE and WinME allow for a selective boot where you can control the items (applications, drivers, etc) to be executed or not - Does XP still allow this (have not used it and not on the machine to try).

Since the computer is still freezing in safe mode (minimal drivers and services being activated) I do no think this would really help.

If you niece has bootable XP disks, try runnig sfc from command line to see if there is a problem with a file or file system.

Have a look at Bart's Preinstalled Environment (BartPE) bootable live windows CD/DVD. This can provide an execellent debugging environment.

Hi Joe,
Thanks for the link, although this time I lucked out and she had all the disks and I was able to repair the installation. I don't have a clue what the repair actually did, but it allowed me access into her machine. I then went out to update the anti-virus, anti-adware, anti-"whatever" and that's when the fun began.
First Symantec started howling about windows/System32/dp.sys on its real-time scans, which led me to this about the vundo rootkit. After running Step 8 (VundoFix.exe) three times, it finally came up clean. All the while this was occurring, Symantec was yelling at me (again real-time) about deleting and quarantining a trojan.worm and trojan.zlob, located in the system restore points, which I turned off, for now anyway. Then came the adware scans.......last month I was able to load Spybot and Spyware Blaster (she already had AdAware, but of course, that doesn't mean she'd actually run them), and amongst other things, AdAware came out with Virtumonde (an adware program that downloads and displays popup advertisements).
So now I'm running a complete anti-virus scan for the 3 time, 2nd came up clean, but you never know. Have finished running AdAware and SpyBot, again 3 times each. (I'm stuck on 3's today for some reason..... ).
Sorry I wasn't able to get back to this as soon as I had wanted to, I had to deal with some family issues (other than this niece's computer ).
Thanks also Scott, for your input. Third times a charm for these "anti-" program runs. I think I can give her laptop back to her this afternoon and I'm sure to get an eye-rolling, toe-tapping response to my suggesting to her that she need to do a little bit more to defend her computer.
Thanks again.

You're welcome. Glad you got the PC up and going. Seems like it was an 'adventure'.
