# Thread: Top heavy fractions (Excel 2000)

1. ## Top heavy fractions (Excel 2000)

Hi! How do you get excel to show top heavy fractions - 3/2 for example? It wants to convert them to a date "3 Feb 2006" for a Brit like me!

Regards

You must enter it with an equal sign so it knows that it is a number:
=3/2

It will normally display as 1.5 then (if formatted as general). Format as custom 0/2 and it will be the number 3/2 (=1.5) which can be used in calculations.

In case you are not wanting to have it viewed as a decimal, you can convert it to text by putting a single inverted comma in front of the 3/2

Like so <big><big>' 3/2</big></big> you will now see it as <big><big>3/2</big></big>
