buying new win xp (win xp)

    Hello:

I was told that if I was to buy a new computer, I would have to also purchase a new copy of windows. I do have a legal copy on my computer currently.

Would appreciate anyone advising me differently.

    thanks

Unless you bought your legal copy separately from the computer AND you are going to decomission the computer you DO need to purchase another copy of windows.

Or to put it another way, you can't have ONE copy of Windows on TWO computers, at the same time .

If your current computer came with an OEM copy of Windows then you cannot transfer this to another computer.

So, you can only install your current version of Windows on another computer if it was a full retail copy of Windows, and you will no longer be running it on the old computer.

You may want to checkout "Registration / Activation (XP (SP2))" <post#= 591,069>post 591,069</post#>.

    Hello IMNetUser :

Thanks for those links, OEM version, is out in the cold. NO can do with OEM versions. However, I think that my specs will be more than enough to use the new office 2007. My computer is only five years old, not too mention I call him charley, and he has never let me down yet.

OEM versions can also be bundled with a new computer purchase, and these are usually tied to the hardware in the computer they came with. If you have the OEM product and it was separate from the computer purchase, then you can use it - provided you wipe XP from the first machine. You'll then need to call Microsoft's Product Activation hotline and explain those circumstances in order for it to be activated on the new box.

If you have any plans at all to use the existing computer after getting the new one, get another copy of XP. It's less hassle, and you can then use both machines.

    Hello Mark:

After reading your post, you have put a smile on my face. thank God, for receipts; when I purchased my computer system back in 2002 it was with the OS win 98, a year later I purchased the WinXP OEM version on its own.

I could hug you, oop's sorry...lost control for a minute.

    Thank you

    Hello:

Thanks you to all whom answered my thread, though, I am still not sure. My current computer did not come with any software. However, I did purchase a copy of the OEM version.

I suppose, I rather be safe than sorry. My IT guy sold me the OEM version, only to tell me that I need to purchase another copy. I will keep my fingers crossed, I am waiting to find out what the new specs are for office 2007.

    I have a pentium 4, with 1GB.

    Thanks again,

    dillon
