Do you mean mail merge?

If the document is the end result of a mail merge, there is no way to determine the data source.
If the document is a merge document with merge fields, you should be able to find the source in one of the following ways:

- Activate the Mail Merge task pane and go to Step 3 of 6. It should display the current data source.

or

- Activate the Visual Basic Editor (Alt+F11)
- Activate the Immediate window (Ctrl+G)
- Type
? ActiveDocument.MailMerge.DataSource.Name

- Press Enter

If I reopen an existing merge document, and go to Tools...Letters and Mailing...Mail Merge it reopens the Merge wizard at step 3 with the data source displayed.
