    Must I?? (IE6)

    Woody Leonard wrote "today":

"Even if you use Firefox religiously (and I do), even if you have absolutely no intention of using Internet Explorer (and I don't), you still need to give IE 6 the heave-ho. Why? IE is so intertwined with Windows that leaving the old version intact simply begs for problems. You might as well hang a sign on your monitor that says, "Kick me."

I thought this was going to be "by choice"?

And is he correct about all the "issues" that will crop up?

Are you talking about IE 6 or IE 7?

    Personally, I think Woodie is getting like a "Prophet of Doom" at times. <img src=/S/cranky.gif border=0 alt=cranky width=18 height=25>

Do you have a link to that post? I wonder whether some context might be missing.

Because you use Outlook 2003, you can't just yank out IE6 without losing HTML mail functionality... at least not until IE7 is proven compatible.

No, I mean the upgrade to IE7...

I know you've got to have some IE installed, and IE6 is working OK as the vehicle.

But I still have problems with IE7 and HTML mail in Outlook, so I ain't switching... anybody listening...? Maybe not... 'Specially if I don't move over to Vista, and THAT is a BIG ?????

    Chuck,

I think what Woody is saying is that MS isn't making the upgrade "mandatory" and you will have the option not to download the update (he even gave a link to a tool that will add a reg value to prevent it from being foisted on you as an automatic update). He is saying that it is in your best interest to get IE7 because IE6 is such unholy (or hole filled if you prefer) <img src=/w3timages/censored.gif alt=censored border=0>. Just wait for a month or so to let the dust settle.

We all went through this with SP2 and that turned out OK. Accept the fact that change is inevitable and take Woody's advice. Wait a month or two and then take the plunge. MS is gonna pester you with that update until you either get it or the reg hack to make it go away. <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15>

    Re: Must I?? (IE6)

    Doc:

    I actually found SP-2 painless.

And historically, as I think many of the board member are aware, I'm certainly not afraid to jump in.

BUT, we're talking here, not about a program upgrade, but in fact, in many ways, an OS upgrade.

When they talked about '7' being part of Vista, I thought, "Hey, that could be cool", figuring that I would be able to watch Vista for a while first, since, I do believe, that '7' was designed more for Vista than XP.

And we're also talking about effects on major app, such as Office, of which IE is an integral part.

And when the issues are as basic as mouse activities not really solid, well, it's almost funny, if it weren't so critical.

    but then, that's just MHO.

    Regards,
    Chuck

It's too soon to worry about resisting IE7 -- it hasn't even been released yet! So... let's return to this in 3 months and see how MS did with the launch. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

(Note: 3 months is an estimate, subject to change, and based on no promises that I can find anywhere.)

    Re: Must I?? (IE6)

    Chuck,

While I agree that this is not just some silly patch, but a major system upgrade as you say, I seem to recall that Woody himself said that SP2 was more like an OS upgrade than a service pack when it first came out. And as far as IE7 being built for Vista and IE6 being made for XP, Woody says in the newsletter that IE6 was built on the IE4 platform, and that was developed in '97 for Windows 95b or Window 98 and hasn't changed much since then.

Make an image backup of your system before you install IE7 and if you don't like the changes, restore the image. You can't run from the future forever. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

I've got no problem with a floating delivery date, although that would certainly not be very normal for Microsoft...

I just want the blinking thing to work.

I have enough trouble with normal activities to deal with an OS that has it's own agenda.

    Thanks.

I did, thank goodness, both times I tried IE7, and went back both times.

Sides, there are people still using Office 98 and IE 5.5, right? So I'll just live up to my rep as "Ol Fogey", and sit back and wait!

Well, at least you tried. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> Guess you'd better get the toolkit and block IE7 from downloading.
