    Setting default configurations for envelopes (Word 2000)

    I compose a letter. I print an envelope using the name and address I have typed. I set the envelope orientation to suit my printer. Next time I go to print an envelope I have to set my orientation again. Clicking on the reset button doesn't seem to do anything. Any idea of how to get the envelope orientation to stick?

    Do you have an up-to-date printer driver for your printer?

    The printer is an Epson Stylus Color 600. The printer driver is the one that came on the CD when I bought the printer. Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

    Re: Setting default configurations for envelopes (Word 2000)

    Hi John:

    Make the setting through Windows first. In "My Computer", you'll find a printers folder. Open it & choose the default printer & set your properties. There are slightly different tabs for different printers.

    If that alone doesn't do it, open normal.dot itself & go to File/Print... & choose Properties. Make your changes but don't print an envelope. Just close normal.dot, saving any changes.

    Hope this helps.

    Went to my default printer and there didn't seem to be anything in the properties about envelope orientation. Also went to the normal.dot. Funny thing is that when I go to the envelopes and labels, close it but stay in the same document and go there again, it is right back where it started - at the wrong orientation and I have to set it again. It is no huge problem, just a bit of an annoyance. <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>

    Re: Setting default configurations for envelopes (Word 2000)

    Word's Envelope Print options are supposed to be sticky. When you click "Reset", it changes to Word's default for that printer. Obviously, those aren't the defaults you need, and may be why you're having difficulties.

    Open Word and at a clean document go to Tools / Envelopes and Labels. On the Envelopes tab, click on Options and switch to the Printing Options tab. Select your options and click on OK. Then close your dialog by clicking on the X in the upper right-hand corner. Exit Word and if prompted to save Normal.dot, say yes.

    It should stick so that the next time you access the panel it will be as you prefer. Please let me know.

    In the properties for the printer, there is nothing about envelopes, so I am still searching for a solution. <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>

    Did exactly as you instructed. I wasn't prompted to update the template. Nothing happened. Oh well! Thanks for your suggestions.

    John:

    One last thing to try, update your printer drivers. Just b/c it came on a CD doesn't mean it will work. Try the Epson website. If you can't find it, one of these might help:
    <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.worldowindows.com/ci.htm>http://www.worldowindows.com/ci.htm</A>
    <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.driverguide.com/>http://www.driverguide.com/</A>
    <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.windrivers.com/>http://www.windrivers.com/</A>

    Hope this helps.

    P.S. Try two more things:
    1) Open normal.dot itself & follow Karen's instructions. Then close & save normal.dot.

    2) If that doesn't work, rename normal.dot to normal.bak. Then start Word & close it. You'll now have a new normal.dot. Open that, follow Karen's instructions & see if that works.

    3) If not (I know I said two things, but...), go to the Word startup folder (probably in

    C:WINDOWSApplication DataMicrosoftWordSTARTUP

    & remove everything in it temporarily. Then try your printer settings again.

    Re: Setting default configurations for envelopes (Word 2000)

    While envelope orientation is supposed to be "sticky", it seems to be broken for lots of people -- I've answered the same question a half dozen times in the newsgroups. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

    What I've done to save my sanity is put a global template, Envelope.dot, in the Word startup folder and put this macro in it:

    Sub ToolsEnvelopesAndLabels()
    Dim dlg As Dialog
    Set dlg = Dialogs(wdDialogToolsEnvelopesAndLabels)
    With dlg
    .DefaultOrientation = wdLeftPortrait
    .DefaultFaceUp = True
    .Show
    End With
    Set dlg = Nothing
    End Sub

    The settings are correct for the Epson Stylus Color 600, which is what I have, too.

    Re: Setting default configurations for envelopes (Word 2000)

    Thanks, Jay. That would certainly work the trick. I can't help but wonder why the setting isn't sticking to begin with. Ah well, I'm sure it's yet another mystery of Office.

    Thanks for the code!

    Thanks for letting me know, because I tried everything everybody else suggested without success. I will try your solution. Thanks.
