Best way to remove trojan horse virus

    Hello,

For some strange reason my PC is infected with a trojan horse virus. The reason l notice this is that sometimes Firefox freezes when l exit it, also l cannot get Thunderbird to work properly ,as it keeps asking for pop3 passswords. Also for some strange reason my favourites went missing from Firefox then l put the back then theyt went missing again, very odd!
I have all the necessary spyware installed i.e spyware guard, spybot search & destroy and others.
I also have Avast installed but the problem is Avast did not detect this and cannot remove it know having tried various times using Avast.
I am curiious as to how having some many anti-spware programs and also having Firefox installed and Avast installed that the trojan horse was not detected and removed.

I am considering removing all files in C drive and then reinstalling all the software as l don't know of another solution.
i.e re-formatting the whole of C drive, (This is going to be very time consuming though)
Does any know of a better / quicker solution and also how to prevent this from happening in the future as l am baffled as to how it occured in the first place?

I have tried to re-install Thunderbird and Firefox but this did not resolve the problem.

Can anyone recommend any FREE software to remove trojan horse virus?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How do you know you have a trojan? Does Avast tell you so, and if it does, what is the name reported for it? If so, a screenshot of an Avast message would be helpful. (I run Avast too, but only for the past several months and haven't had any infections, so I don't know what the warning message might look like.)

The reason for the questions is that your problems with Fx and Thunderbird could very well be caused by some other operating system corruption, in spite of the fact that you've re-installed both applications. Do you by any chance have a full backup at a time before the problem showed up?

You might want to create a new profile for Firefox. This is a blank slate to which you can add your existing bookmarks, and various other items. More info: Profile Manager - MozillaZine Knowledge Base

If that helps, you can do a similar thing with Thunderbird.

    Hi,

I have decided to download the latest versions of t/bird and f/fox and remove the older versions and see if this makes any difference.

Googling on "Ranky-DR" produces lots of hits, among which are:

avast! Virus Cleaner - avast! Virus Cleaner - Free tool for removing viruses from your computer

    TROJ_RANKY.DR - Description and solution

I also found a page on the Avast domain that said that 21 June 2006, pattern file 0625-5 included Ranky-DR. What level is your Avast?

You have the 9/15/2006, version 0637-2 which is newer than Al's post indicated. The Ranky-DR should be on there, which is verified by the fact that it picked up the Ranky-Dr virus in your scan.

Use the removal tools that Al linked to in his post and see if they remove the "bugs". <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>

Right on, what Bob said. You have the latest update. I've not had a need thank goodness, so I can't tell you what to expect, but try the removal tool first.

Well, probably not. The programs update themselves, so you should have the latest version already. And if you uninstall and reinstall, or install over, your profile usually is preserved. (Otherwise, you have to recreate your bookmarks, etc., from scratch.) That is why it is a helpful test to create a new profile, as I suggested.
