    PerfectDisk 8

I know we have a number of users, but just in case you didn't get the email: http://www.raxco.com/. Upgrading 7 to 8 is about $20 US

Ok, BUT, Vista users are having some issues at this time.

Several software makers have released new versions, but none of then stated that they are Vista compatable, including PaintShop IX and Roxio Easy Creator 9

Well, we need to be careful here, Dave. Since Vista is not yet "gold" it's not fair to hammer a software product for its shortcomings on a beta OS.

PS I don't know which PSP product you meant to reference. You said IX but that's not the current product.

Vista is NOT gold, but these suppliers are jumping the gun to try and get their products out, because MS has been slow with their release. This appears to a step for more money when Vista IS released as a major MAY be needed for the new product to be compatible.

    Re: PerfectDisk 8

My only point Dave, is that there's nothing on the Raxco page that says it's OK for Vista, nor here: Raxco Software Windows Products - PerfectDisk 8.0

I (sometimes) agree that software vendors do a number on us, but I don't think this one is "false advertising." Everyone can obviously make their own decision.

    Re: PerfectDisk 8

My point is that some people are going to assume that a release this close to the release of a NEW OS, the the product will work. So if one buys one of these new program versions in hope that it will work with Vista, it may not.

I intended for my post to be a "Heads up".

    Hey Al,

Raxco does offer a maintenance program. I bought a 2 year maintenance a few months ago for US$12.00. My upgrade to v8 was covered by the maintenance agreement. I would expect that any upgrade that might be required for Vista will also be covered... assuming Vista is released before June 2008 !! <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    A maintenance agreement is handy.

That sounds like a very good deal, Bob, wish I had thought of it too. $12 vs. $20 ! !

    Re: PerfectDisk 8

    Hi Dave,

There is a beta version of PerfectDisk 8.0 that can be used for Vista RC1. Hope this doesn't contravene copyright rules but here's a snippet of information from the Raxco site.

"Is PerfectDisk compatible with Windows Vista RC1?

Windows Vista is non-released (beta) software that is still being changed by Microsoft. There is a beta version of PerfectDisk 8.0 available for installation on Windows Vista RC1 which can be downloaded from the Raxco Download Site. The PefectDisk 8 Beta for Vista will only install on RC1 or newer versions of Vista. Please note that technical support for PerfectDisk running on Windows Vista is limited. When Windows Vista is officially released by Microsoft, PerfectDisk 8.0 will be officially supported and will be Certified by Microsoft for use on Vista.

    Cheers, Bob
    Regards,
    Bob

    Re: PerfectDisk 8

I took advantage of the same offer and installed the new version yesterday. I'm a little uncertain about it. I prefer the colour scheme of version 7. The new version seems garish and I prefer the old way of showing fragmented files (a white outline) to the new deeper shading. The splash screen claims that everything is faster - well the start-up time is definitely slower and I have doubts that the defragmentation time of the new version is any quicker - at least on my system. The new version has a button that offers the user to immediately launch the recommended action after analysis. I thought this would bypass the annoying double analysis of previous versions but it doesn't. Press the button and Version 8 re-analysis's the drive before getting on with actually defragging. This just seems daft. Having said all this, the new feature of being able to defrag a single file looks very promising. I guess time will tell.
