    Firefox and Associations (Firefox 1.5.0.7)

I just re-installed my Firefox, and now, the icons for htm and html documents all look like the "old DOS icons" that you would get if Windows couldn't find an icon.

I installed it from scratch, and the associations appear to be OK, because I can load either type directly into Firefox by double-clicking the file. I tried setting the icons for the two types, and, although the Firefox icons are there to pick from, they won't "stick"

What the heck did I do wrong here, and is there any way to fix it?

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

    >> What the heck did I do wrong here...

Installed Firefox 2 Beta 2 without making sure you had a backup or restore point you could use?
Apart from that, what else did you do? Did you uninstall Firefox before installing the beta? Was the beta fully uninstalled before you re-installed?...
Using your pc for beta testing withing a get-out clause is not recommended, you should know that by now!

There are plenty of posts on restoring icons - perhaps one of those may help? You could try resetting the default file association back to IE, then back to Firefox, or re-installing IE...

Hang on. I don't think that's what Chuck said he did. His version number in his post is 1.5.0.7, which is what my FF has just updated itself to today.

I can't say whether it has done the same to my icons, as FF is not my default browser.

FWIW - I downloaded FF 1.5.0.7 on numerous machines today (OS is XP Pro, WinME, W98SE) and had no icon problems. FF is default on all machines.

Did you try my suggestion of resetting the file association to IE?

    Yea, 3 times.

I'll tell you what did work though, going back to v1.5.0.3.

So Somewhere in the "upgarde" they forgot a piece. Now I'll try installing 1.5.0.7 OVER .0.3, and see...

Now maybe I'll try and put v2 over 1.5.0.7... just because I can't leave well enough alone!

Is it called a little "hair of the dog that bit you?" Or, "let sleeping dogs lie?" Or, "I told my doctor it hurts when I do THIS," so he said: "...don't do that..."

    Yea, Yea, Yea....

Starting in version 1.5.0, the application has automatic updates. You might turn that on and see whether that method, which applies slim patches rather than reinstalling the entire application, works more smoothly.

    Jefferson:

Yea, I'd been using that up through 1.5.0.7, but it wasn't (as yet) available for getting up to v2, as it still was beta...

So now I'm at 1.5.0.7, and I've imaged my drive (Hello, leif), and now I'm (thinking about) trying again.

I think, from a novice perspective, that they "forgot" something in v2, thinking you would be installing over a previous version. That's why even 1.5.0.7 does the same thing if you install from scratch.

They really ought to tell you if that is the case ("This is NOT a full install...).

Re: Firefox and Associations (Firefox 1.5.0.7)

Don't know if anyone cars, but:

I just re-installed v2b2 of Firefox OVER my current install of 1.5.0.7, which in fact had to go OVER 1.5.0.3 to be complete, and now it SEEMS to be working fine...

So what they usually tell you, to uninstall all previous versions, is wrong in this case.

I certainly hope the final will be all of a piece!

    Chuck Billow
