    Picture gone (Word2003)

I had some nice templates with a picture in the footer, suddenly the picture is gone. All I see is a placeholder with a red cross in the upper left corner (as you get e.g. in IE when a connection with the Internet is lost). This must be a setting but I have no clue as to which one. Tried some but nothing helped... Any clues as what might have happened here?

Go to Tools - Options - View. Is the picture placeholder box checked? If you want to see pictures it shouldn't be.

Thanks! Yes, I had checked that this morning already, it wasn't. This is very strange... an hour ago it suddenly worked, I just tried and it didn't. One minute later it did again.... (and yes, this picture is inside the Word-doc and "Links..." is grayed out)

Where is this picture located? Is it on a network in another location or is it located on your "C" drive? If it happens to be on a network drive, do you always have access to the picture file or is your access intermitted?

Like I indicated earlier, the picture is inside the document (I don't believe it is retrieved from the network)

    Two things to check.

First, is the picture inline or floating? If you right-click the picture and choose Format Picture, then the Layout tab. Is it "Inline with text" or something else?If it is not Inline with text, temporarily make it so. You can undo this later.

Second, just to make sure there's no OLE object problem, if you press Alt+F9, does the picture change into a field code (e.g., EMBED PBrush or anything like that)? You can convert an embedded picture object into a plain old picture by clicking in the field code and pressing Ctrl+Shift+F9.

Feel free to undo anything done above.

    Re: Picture gone (Word2003)

I must admit that the non-display of the picture only happened to me (and a colleague) some days back and never before or afterwards (and it's still OK today). I did not (to my knowledge) change anything to the document of WORD.

Picture is not "in-line" but uses "Square". If I change, it messes up my document big time. First time it creates and extra page BEFORE page 1. The picture on the new page one is now "in-line" the picture on the old page one (now page two) is still square. If then I repeat my action and make the picture on the old page one in-line again, I suddenly get 38 (!!) pages.

Note that the picture is used as background on each page (it's sort of a logo), and is (thus) attached to the footer. And yes, my first page footer is different so there might be part of the behavior explained...

Pressing Alt-F9 (or the {a} button I normally use for that) does NOT change anything.

    Re: Picture gone (Word2003)

    I've tried various combinations of:

    Tools, Options..., View > Drawings
Tools, Options..., View > Picture Placeholders

with both pictures positioned in front of text in a footer and TextBoxes (containing pictures) positioned in front of text in a footer and inline pictures.

Under no circumstances can I get a red X to appear.

Intermittent "red x" could indicate problems with available memory or the display drivers, but given your scenario, I don't think it's a setting you can toggle one way or the other.

Yep, I agree. It was (and is) a mystery to me as well. Guess we can't solve everything, thanks for your efforts & time! :-)

    Re: Picture gone (Word2003)

Might be a simple fix, but resize the graphic before you insert it using Insert?

If it still gives you the same problem then you have a different issue... but if it works, resize the graphic through the properties menu of the picture.
