    Installing Updates (XP Home SP2)

I'm trying to help a neighbor lady who just inherited a computer and has a dial-up connection (a slow one at that). I turned off the Automatic Update feature, as the computer intdiates that it is missing updates starting with KB918899 through kb922582 -- amounting to some 34 updates which is probably several hundred MB and would take days to download over her slow connection. My thought is to download all of these updates on my high speed connection and burn them onto a CD to install on her computer. Is this a good idea? Any better ideas?

    Chuck,
I don't see anything wrong with that; I suppose it would be the same as using a SUS server in a larger network, only you're bringing the updates to the computer, instead of the computer reaching out to another machine.

I would reckon that you're probably looking at more like 50 MB than at "several hundred MB" for that quantity of fixes (in passing, wouldn't it be useful if Microsoft Update told you the total size of the files to be download somewhere prominently?).

But since the dial-up problem won't go away, what are the chances of getting her to move to any form of broadband?

Alternatively, just use Custom updating (rather than Express), select a likely number of updates, and let it download and install these overnight. Your local calls are free, I believe, so let's hope you dial 'locally'!

The information is there if you want it!

    It's so long since I did an update (a day or two), so I had forgotten this... <img src=/S/doh.gif border=0 alt=doh width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/dizzy.gif border=0 alt=dizzy width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/frown.gif border=0 alt=frown width=15 height=15> [grrrh]
