Month text to number (2003)

I have a list containing the months of the year - I need to be able to find away to relate the list month to the number of the month, ie January = 1, February = 2 etc.in another cell
I have tried =if () but this has limited options and will not do the 12 months

    Any suggestions

Assume your Month list is in A1:A12
Assume that in B1 you have March (or whatever month you wish as your target month)

Then enter in some other cell:
    =MATCH(B1,A1:A12)

This will return: 3 which is the 3rd item in the list.

If you want to do it without the separate list, you could use:

    =MONTH(DATEVALUE(A1&" 2006"))

    Legare,

Thanks for the reply and sorry about the delay in getting back to you - will give it a try.
