CD-ROM Disappeared

I tried to open the drawer and it would not open and no lights appeared. I went to My Computer and the CD-Rom has disappeared. It was there last week, and I don't know how to reinstall it. I also searched this forum, with no results.
It was listed as Drvie E - Samsung CD-ROM SC-148C.

Will someone tell me, step-by-step how to get my drive listed and usable again.
Thank you for all assistance.

Re: CD-ROM Disappeared

Let's start by looking in Disk Management.

Right click on My Computer
Select Manage from the menu
Click Disk Management on the left
Look at the bottom right to see if your CD-ROM is there
If it is there then right click it and choose Change Drive Letter and Paths...
Tell it to be Drive E:

Re: CD-ROM Disappeared

If, in following Stuart's suggestion, you do not see the drive in Disk Management: the power or IDE cable may have worked itself loose. You can easily open the case and make sure that all of the cables are firmly seated. You might consider unplugging the cables and reseating them just to be sure. Don't be afraid to do this, just shut down the computer and go at it. DO NOT unplug it from the wall, as this will remove the ground and prevent any static electricity from discharing properly.

If after that you still have no lights, no action, and nothing in Windows... then it sounds as if the unit has gone on to hardware heaven. Or maybe it's holding out for Service Pack 2.

Re: CD-ROM Disappeared

My CD-ROM is not listed in neither Disk Management nor Device Manager.

This is what's listed in Disk Management:

Disk 0 Maxtor 76.3 GB Healthy System
Disk 1 Maxtor 30.75 GB (D) Healthy System
Disk 2 Removable USB Disk 31 MB FAT Healthy
CD-ROM 1 (F) No Media This is my HP CD Writer +9300

Originally the missing device was 1 and drive letter E.

Re: CD-ROM Disappeared

I thought that might be the case when no light was visible.
I did not see it listed in Disk Managment and I will do as you suggest and return to let you know if that solved the problem. If not, I will now be able to justify buying a new CD-ROM.

As for 'Or maybe it's holding out for Sevice Pack 2'
if it is, it's going to be holding it's breath until the undertaker comes to take it away.

Re: CD-ROM Disappeared

Since you saw no light - this suggestion is probably useless. Try booting into BIOS and see if the device shows up on the controller. If it does, the device driver needs to be re-installed.

Do you know of an undertaker that buries CD-ROM's? The poor thing must have died and I didn't even notice it. What a shame.

Make sure you check the cables were plugged in properly before you through it away, also check that the jumper hasn't worked itself loose (sometimes happens if it's a bit old or cheap), as a missing jumper can confuse the computer, though a cut off of power probably means molex (4 pin cable) has come out, sorry if i am not helpful enjoy.

Re: CD-ROM Disappeared

My CPU sits in a cabinet attached to my desk and is never moved. I don't understand how the cables or pins could come loose.
I will get someone to open it and check. Even if I buy a new one, the case will have to be opened to install it. Although CD-ROMs are dirt cheap, re-connecting wires or pins will be less expensive.

Thanks for the reminder.

You are obviously far too young to remember the days when PC memory cards 12" long and 3

You're right, I don't remember, I never heard of Thermal Creep. You make such a logical case, if I hadn't decided to check for loose connections, I would be convinced now.
