    Windows shortcuts (Win XP)

Is there a Windows shortcut (eg: the 'Windows' key + ??) to log-off (instead of having to go START-LOGOFF) ?

    Re: Windows shortcuts (Win XP)

    From here

Windows XP comes with its own shortcut utility, shutdown.exe
Click on any empty space on the desktop and click on 'New Shortcut'

For Shutdown enter the below code
    shutdown.exe -s -t 0

For Restart enter the below code
    shutdown.exe -r -t 0

For Log Off enter the below code
    shutdown.exe -I -t 0

Now click on next and give a name to your shortcut. Then click on Finish.

Note the -t switch, this stands for time. -t 0 means the shutdown or reboot action will begin immediately without delay after clicking your shortcut. If you wanted to hold off the shutdown and restart for a certain length of time, for whatever reason, then just indicate the number of seconds after the -t. i.e. -t 30 would wait 30 seconds before shutting down or restarting.

    Or from Microsoft's KB...

Contrary to what Doc's post says, it doesn't take a MS natural keyboard. The WindowsKey-L combination works on just about all keyboards that I'm aware of.

    Al,
That should LOCK the desktop, and will require the open account password!

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

MS may disagree with you there Al. Check out this KB article and then scroll down to the Microsoft Natural Keyboard with IntelliType software installed section. From the article, that seems to be the only keyboard it does work on.

That's where I pulled the posted info from. My bad for not linking to it. <img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15>

If you depress the Windows key, then depress the 'u' key, then the 'u' key again you will log off.

Here's the XP KB article - List of the keyboard shortcuts that are available in Windows XP. The Windows key shortcuts work on all the systems at work and none of them have a MS Natural keyboard.

    Re: Windows shortcuts (Win XP)

An alternative to pressing keys could be a mouse click!

If you were to set up a desktop shortcut for either the WIndows XP SHUTDOWN command or SysInternals' PSSHUTDOWN utility, with the appropriate parameters (see the Help information for either) you could just click on it to cause Logoff...

    I didn't write the lists Joe. I just quoted from one. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

But what's even more surprising <img src=/S/hmmn.gif border=0 alt=hmmn width=15 height=15> is what this list says that the Windows Key-L combo will do as opposed to what the list I originally linked to says it will do. <img src=/S/yikes.gif border=0 alt=yikes width=15 height=15>

Just trying to point to the version appropriate to the OS in questions <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Well, I think 'lock the keyboard' is a mis-statement. What is really does is lock the computer requiring someone to use C+A+D to unlock it.

    Re: Windows shortcuts (Win XP)

You are absolutely correct that your list was OS specific and the one I linked to was a general summary for all OS's.

My surprise was that the one I linked to said that the combo logged the user off and your list said that it locks the keyboard. I suppose it's just another MS "feature" and we must have an option as to which function we would like the key combo to perform. They probably put that in another KB article somewhere else. <img src=/S/hmmn.gif border=0 alt=hmmn width=15 height=15>

I don't have IntelliType easily accessible at the moment. But I suspect it will allow you to map functions to keystrokes. And if it doesn't Microsoft still has Download details: Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator (MSKLC) Version 1.3.4073.

    I use an MS Natural Keyboard and I don't have the software installed on this computer. <img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15> I don't use many keyboard shortcuts. I'm a mouse man myself. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
