Copy from Search results window (XP - Various)

My wife works in the local school, and they have all been instructed to move their data files from their local disks to a network directory (I know they should have been there in the first place but!!!!!!!)

Anyway, most of the teachers are computer illiterate and have no clue where they've been savings files, and I expect that the pc's are riddled with files all over the place. I had hoped to show them how to move them using the Windows search, but so far I've failed.

99% of what they have been using on these pcs are doc, xls, jpg or ppt files (They tend to use Macs for the graphics work with the kids). I was hoping to show them how to do a combined search, and then just drag from the search results window to the new folder. I know they would lose any directory structure there, but that is not a serious issue.

However, on testing at home on my own PC (XP Home SP2), I find that I can't drag files from the search results window. If I right click (or use menus), the copy option is available, but when I try to paste, its grayed out.

Can anyone help me here? Is there a setting to change, or does Windows simply not permit copying from the search results windows? If not can anyone suggest any work rounds, bearing in mind my target audience who struggle to find anything beyond the START button?

    Thanks

I've just tried it here and it works OK (copying to a local temp folder).

Can you try copying one or two at a time (as opposed to all at once) to a local folder to confirm it doesn't work?

    Things to watch out for:
Files that appear in hidden or system folders - the recycle bin for example - or in profiles where you may not have permission.
Files that appear in recently accessed lists

    I don't know what I did either, but I'm glad it's working now <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>
