    Keystroke Lists (2003 SP2)

    Is there a way to get a list of anassigned keystrokes?

    Failing that, is there a list of keystrokes that is organized in a way that might make it easier to find a large block of fairly similar unassigned keystrokes?

    From the Print... menu you could pick Key Assignments, that will give you a printout showing all the assigned keys.

    Re: Keystroke Lists (2003 SP2)

    That doesn't get you all the keystrokes (or at least it didn't when I printed it).

    I have figured out this much (following the help on printing shortcut keys):
    1) On the Tools menu, point to Macro, and then click Macros.
    2) In the Macros in box, click Word commands.
    3) In the Macro name box, click ListCommands.
    4) Click Run.
    5) In the List Commands dialog box, click Current menu and keyboard settings.
    6) Click OK.
    7) On the File menu, click Print.

    This creates a table that can be sorted by modifier (CTRL, ALT and so on), and then key.

    But, it doesn't tell me if all keystrokes are permissible (e.g., is there something unusual like ALT-CTRL-Pause that is blocked by Windows), or if they are the same or different (is CTRL-1 on the alphabetic keyboard the same as CTRL-1 on the numeric keypad).

    Re: Keystroke Lists (2003 SP2)

    If I've done it right, the crude little macro below (Word2000+) will list all keystroke shortcuts in use.
    The macro could be tweaked (and probably will be!) to provide the inverse list, of all keystrokes currently unassigned.
    Even a list of unassigned shortcuts employing the 26 alphabetic keys would be useful.<pre>Sub Macro1()
    Application.ListCommands (False)
    ActiveDocument.Tables(1).Columns(4).Delete
    ActiveDocument.Tables(1).Columns(1).Delete
    Selection.Sort ExcludeHeader:=True, FieldNumber:="Column 2", SortFieldType _
    :=wdSortFieldAlphanumeric, SortOrder:=wdSortOrderAscending, FieldNumber2 _
    :="Column 1", SortFieldType2:=wdSortFieldAlphanumeric, SortOrder2:= _
    wdSortOrderAscending, FieldNumber3:="", SortFieldType3:= _
    wdSortFieldAlphanumeric, SortOrder3:=wdSortOrderAscending, Separator:= _
    wdSortSeparateByTabs, SortColumn:=False, CaseSensitive:=False, LanguageID _
    :=wdEnglishUS
    Dim rw As Row
    For Each rw In Selection.Tables(1).Rows
    Dim strRow As String
    strRow = rw.Range.Text
    While (Left$(strRow, 1) = Chr$(7)) Or (Left$(strRow, 1) = Chr$(13))
    strRow = Right$(strRow, Len(strRow) - 1)
    Wend
    If Len(strRow) = 0 Then
    rw.Delete
    Else
    End If
    Next rw
    End Sub</pre>

    Re: Keystroke Lists (2003 SP2)

    I like the idea of doing an inverse, but that's beyond what I can do.

    Anyway, I ran this, and it only ran partially. I attached the file it created. It's dropped the alphabetic keys.

    The de###### says it failed on the 3rd line ( ActiveDocument.Tables(1).Columns(4).Delete).

    Thanks. Could you please re-attach it as a Word DOC file for those of us who have purged our DOCX readers?

    Have you tried Zipping the file?

    Re: Keystroke Lists (2003 SP2)

    I have it now, thanks.
    I loaded my Word2003 and the macro ran properly.
    When I opened your (emailed) document in Word2003, I noticed it made a reference to my XSpeech utility. Had you hooked it up to any template other than Normal.dot on your end?

    Nope - not according to "Manage Templates" under "Add-Ins" on the Office Button menu, I have nothing loaded but normal.dot.

    I've never heard of xSpeech either.

    I attached a screen shot of where the error shows up.
