    News Error (MSO 2003)

I don't use many nntp newsgroups, so I thought I'd just add it ti Outlook.

When I wet to the Go/News Menu item, I got the error below.

What does it refer to, and how can I fix it?

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

I haven't checked for a while, but I thought Outlook used Outlook Express as its newsgroup reader. Can you open that group directly in Outlook Express?

I had (kinda) thought so as well. Although it's more, I think, "same engine, different body", kind of thing.

But yes, they'll open in OE.

It definitely is NOT 'same engine, different body'. Outlook & Outlook Express are two entirely different products from different groups within Microsoft. OE is used at the newsreader because Outlook does not have that capability builtin.

    Joe:

So there you go, now I'm confused again.

How come if it's not the "same engine", I gotta have OE for Outlook to work? And AAMOF, I thought the Outlook newsreader was different than using OE.

Did you follow the instructions from the help file in Outlook?

    Start the newsgroup reader
    Show All
    Hide All
The first time you use the newsreader, you must add the News command to the Go menu.

Add the News command to the Go menu.
    How?

On the Standard toolbar (toolbar: A bar with buttons and options that you use to carry out commands. To display a toolbar, press ALT and then SHIFT+F10.), click the Toolbar Options arrow .
Point to Add or Remove Buttons, and then click Customize.
    Click the Commands tab.
In the Categories list, click Go.
In the Commands list, click News, and drag it, without releasing the mouse, until it rests over the Go menu. When the menu displays a list of commands, point to where you want the command to appear, and then release the mouse.
Click the Go menu, and then click News

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Dave:

I'm unclear what your point was.

I've used the 'News ' command within Outlook before, from the 'Go' menu etc.

And when I did so, it called up the reader. It didn't give me the error I received.

You do NOT have to have OE or use OE to get Outlook to work. There are many newsreader clients you can find on the Internet if you search. Then it is just a matter of selecting the correct program to put in your IE Internet options | Programs tab. BTW, OE can function as a mail client, a news client, or both. If you use Outlook as your e-mail client there is no reason to use OE as the e-mail client. If you wish OE to always start in the newsreader mode add the '/outnews' to the command line in the OE shortcut.

    Joe:

I actually use two readers, FeedDemon, and Agent, usually, for those groups in which I take a more active role.

But I thought I recalled having a major problem if my OE was screwed up getting my Outlook to run correctly. This isn't the case?

AFAIK, Outlook in no way depends on OE for e-mail functions.
