Windows Picture And Fax Viewer (XPP SP2)

I used to be able to right click on a *.jpg file and select Preview and Windows Picture and Fax Viewer would open it or many selected files up. Now it won't open them when I choose Preview from the Right Click context menu. How can I get this to work again. I did do an Open With and tell it to always use Windows Picture and Fax Viewer but though that will open the picture each time I choose Open With it still won't do a Preview.

    Thanks.

    From here.....

"Several programs when installed try to take over the role of picture preview. This is very difficult to reverse. Here's how you do it.

    1. Click Start
    2. Click Run
    3. In the textbox type: regsvr32 shimgvw. dll
    4. Click OK

You may or may not have to reboot to see your changes."

Thanks but that didn't make it work. it said it was successful and I even rebooted to give it a fair chance but still no Preview.

When I double click on a *.jpg file Windows Picture an Fax Viewer opens it but I can't do a Preview from Right Clicking and choosing Preview. Maybe there is a Regedit but I didn't find it when I Googled for it.

Thanks but that still didn't make the Preview work. I noticed in the week or so ahead of when it stopped working all together it would be slow when trying to preview images but it still worked up until about 4 days ago. I don't know if that gives any indication of the problem or not.

Save attached file, rename it getting rid of ".txt" extension (i.e. live only .reg extension), confirm your choice and merge (double-click) it to the Registry.

Please describe what happens using the context menu - Run task Manager, note any disk activity or CPU usage. Have you checked the Event Logs?

What does happen when you select Preview ??? You didn't mention what, if anything, happens.

This article might provide a bit more insight into WP&FV. Unfortunately, it seems to indicate that reinstalling Windows may be the only solution if the simple fix I suggested earlier doesn't work.

Re: Windows Picture And Fax Viewer (XPP SP2)

    Joe and Doc,

What happens is nothing. I right click and choose Preview and absolutely nothing happens.

The two fixes suggested above. After the first, regsvr32 shimgvw.dll, I was able to highlight many pictures and use "Open With" Windows Picture And Fax Viewer" and go through all that I had highlighted when I opened them. After the running the reg fix file I was only able to use "Open With" to open one file at a time no matter how many were highlighted. I then ran the regsvr32 shimgvw.dll command again and again I could use "Open With" to open and view multiple files.

Joe I'll look at the task manager. No I haven't looked at the Events Log. I don't know where to find it but I try searching for it.

Thanks to you both for your replies.

    DocWatson,

That was an excellent article. It gave me an idea. Maybe running sfc /scannow would help. Any thoughts on that?

To view event logs, right click My Computer and select 'Manage'. There should be an entry named 'Event Viewer'. Just click the '+' and look through each section for errors that might relate to your issue. When you use 'Open With' do you select 'Choose Program' and is there a check box at the bottom 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file'?

Re: Windows Picture And Fax Viewer (XPP SP2)

    Joe,

I had found the Event log and I'll attach the Word file I created with 3 Errors which I don't believe even relates to my issue.

I ran an SFC /scannow and it also did no good.

When I do a Right click and use "Open With" I am presented with a list of programs an I choose Window Picture And Fax Viewer. There is no box checked or unchecked. Yesterday I did see the box you are referring when I made sure that this program was always associated to *.jpg files.

    Thanks for the help.

Its a long shot, but you could try this.
Right-click and Preview as you've done already.

Then right click on the Task Bar and select the 'Cascade Windows' option.
I've read somewhere that the virtual windows desktop is much larger than what you see; and windows can open off the screen. This worked yesterday for my brother who had a problem with Word disappearing .

I don't expect it will work but you never know!

Re: Windows Picture And Fax Viewer (XPP SP2)

Humor me and try this one more time.....

Right-click>Open With>Choose Program select Windows Picture & Fax Viewer and be sure to put a check in the "Always use the selectet program...." box. If there is a check there already, uncheck and recheck it and then OK your way out. <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>

Unfortunately, I think that one or more of the system files that WP&FV relies upon to make it's association with the preview function has become corrupt (it worked, but was slow, before it failed). Perhaps a repair install using the Recovery Console might do the trick, but I really don't know.

Re: Windows Picture And Fax Viewer (XPP SP2)

On the second Right Click the picture opened in the WP&FV so I went under tools-folder options-files and did the association there, undid the check mark then redid it and still no luck. I believe as you said, there is a system file corrupt but running SFC /SCANNOW didn't fix it either.

    Thank you for trying.
