    There are apps that will not work, or will need to be re-activated, because the old registry settings are gone.

    To your steps, I would add one more: run the SysInternals program SDelete against all empty space on the driver to overwrite it with noise data, to make recovery very difficult. I think someone recently posted a link to a GUI-based tool that does the same thing, but I didn't bookmark it...
