Palm Vx Text & Expense query

Could someone advise me on a good text editor I can use with my Palm, plus an Expense program where I can say what the expense 'types' are. (URL's if you've got them)
Thank you in advance

Speaking to the expense program... the one that ships with your Palm Vx is very diverse. You can specify a great deal of information on the palm, then further enhance the data in Excel or a rival spreadsheet program.

I sorry I can't expand on this at the moment, I've left my Palm at work, and I won't be back for another 7 hours or so...

I assume that you are looking for desktop programs that work with the Palm. the best text editor I have found is WordSmith http://www.bluenomad.com/. It replaces your memo app, and allows for formatting. It has hooks into word files.

The Palm expense program is designed to Synch with an Excel spreadsheet.

Chris,

How to you get the expense app to synch to "a rival expense program"? I use QuattroPro in Windows, and StarOffice or GNUmeric in Linux (both read and write Excel files, but StarOffice is also compatible with XLA macros).

I mentioned a rival spreadsheet program, such as Lotus 1-2-3.

I don't know if there are other programs that this will work with, or even it will work with another spreadsheet program. I've only used it in Excel 97 myself.

I was hoping that there was a trick or configuration trick that you knew.

I must admit that I don't use the expense feature on my Palm Vx. We have custom written software for our call tracking database at work which ties up a good portion of the available 8 MB of memory.

Tying that in with the conduit to work with Lotus Notes, and you aren't really left with a whole lot space to do any of the other fancy stuff.

Now where did I put that pencil....

Documents to Go from DataViz allows you to share Word docs and Excel spreadsheets between your PC and your Palm. The latest version handles Office 2000 versions, but you need Documents to Go Profession edition to actually edit or create the docs on the Palm.

Thanks, Charlotte, but I didn't want to put excel docs on my Palm. I don't use excel. I wanted to sync the built in Palm Expense app -- that is designed to sync with excel -- with the spreadsheet program that I do use on the desktop, QuattroPro. QuattroPro reads excel files, so I was hoping there was a way to get the Expense sync to work with it.

You don't have to put *any* documents on your Palm. Documents To Go *allows* you to add a document (Word or Excel) from your PC to your Palm or to start one on the Palm and have it saved back to your PC. I use Excel, but I don't bother with running Excel docs on my Palm.

Re: Palm Vx Text & Expense query

Charlotte,

Thanks again, but you have misunderstood my problem. Perhaps you are not familiar with the Palm Expense App. The Palm, as you know comes preloaded with some Apps in ROM, DateBook, AddressBook, etc. Included among those Apps is one called Expense that allows you to track your expenses.

What sets the Expense App apart from DateBook, AddressBook, ToDo and Memo, is that it does not sync with the Palm Desktop. Instead, it syncs with Excel. When you install the Palm Desktop, it checks to see if you have Excel installed and, if so, installs a conduit and an Excel template to accomplish the sync.

The problem is, the default set up doesn't give you any configuration options on this. If you have Excel, it sets up the Expense <=> Excel sync, if you don't it sets up no Expense synch at all.

I do not have Excel installed. I use QuattroPro. I could adapt the Excel template to work with QuattroPro, but I don't know how to configure the Expense conduit to recognize what I am trying to do.

I understand that Documents to Go is a good product, but I don't use Excel files anywhere, and I can sync Word Docs with WordSmith. As Chris had suggested that the Expense app can sync with "other spreadsheet programs", I thought he might know how to do it. From his response, it appears that he doesn't use the Expense App and does not know how to accomplish the sync.

Chris indicates that he only uses a custom database for his office and Lotus on his Palm and that they are so large that he has no room for any other Palm apps. While I truely appreciate Chris' willingness to moderate this and other forums (fora?), along with his efforts to help by trying to answer questions, I am surprised that someone who does not use any of the standard Palm apps would moderate the Palm forum.

Re: Palm Vx Text & Expense query

Moderators aren't required to answer questions at all, so a thorough knowledge of the products they moderate isn't necessary. We're actually here to facilitate more than to answer questions. If we can help, fine, but that's not actually our main job.

As it happens, I do occasionally use the Palm expense app, but I don't bother to sync it to anything, and I didn't realize Quattro Pro was still around, let alone viable. Not all replies posted are actually directed at the poster. Sometimes, as in my case, they're for general information, since you had already specified that you used Quattro Pro.

Re: Palm Vx Text & Expense query

On my last post, I hope I worded it right and that no offense was taken. I know what volunteering is like and have no intention of criticizing a volunteer moderator -- especially one who is trying to help.

The same goes for my comments directed to you, Charlotte. I appreciate any offers of help, and when I am not understood, I usually presume that I was the one who did not make myself clear.

As for QuattroPro, its still kicking. It is sold as part of the WordPerfect Office Suite. It comes in Windows and Linux flavors (both sharing the same data file formats). I've attempted to switch to Excel a number of times, but every time I try, I reach the conclusion that it (1) will take too long to convert my templates and (2) seems like XL makes it harder for me to do certain takst that I have gotten used to doing the QP way. Kinda feel the same way about Paradox vs. Access. Feel the opposite about Word vs. WordPerfect, preferring Word. I wish suites didn't exist. Other than batch pricing, I don't see the advantage. Would rather pick and choose among indifividual apps.
