Can't log into websites (IE6.0 SP2)

Nearly 2 weeks ago my home PC came down with a severe case of malware. I went to GeeksToGo and enlisted the aid of one of their experts, and aside from the necessary time delays between posts, applied fixes and reports back, it has been going ok. The only problem I have left at this point, though - as far as I can tell - is that I can't log into websites. For example, I am posting this from my work laptop because I can't log into WOPR from my home PC - I'm told I have to enable cookies. Trouble is, I DO have cookies enabled.
I first noticed this problem in GeeksToGo, when I would log in to post an update. I could log in, but when I went to page 2 of my thread, I would get logged off. And when I tried to actually post to the thread, I got a message I was not authorized to post to that thread, even though I had just entered my ID and password.
So far I've noticed similar problems on eBay and Amazon; eBay simply does not recognize my password. When I go there it shows my userid, but when I type in my password it comes right back and asks for it again. No message to say that I typed it in wrong... it's more like I never typed it in in the first place. When I type in the WRONG password there I DO get a message saying so, so it clearly isn't that.
I've gone to Internet Options/Security/Custom level/User Authentication, and it was set to Automatic logon with current username and password . I changed it to Automatic logon only in Intranet zone , which is the setting on my work laptop. That didn't help. Neither did changing it to Prompt for username and password . And Anonymous logon - I just didn't think that was a very good idea.
I know the guy on GeeksToGo is doing his best and that he has a life, and is probably working on other problems there besides mine. So I'm not complaining about him at all. But two weeks of this is enough to drive anyone batty. Any ideas as to what else I can check?

Have you tried adding www.wopr.com and other sites you want to log in on to the list of Trusted Sites (activate the Security tab of Tools | Internet Options, click Trusted Sites, click Sites)?

The malware might have changed or corrupted your Hosts File.. Are you running Spybot S&D ?? And if so, did you make a backup of your hosts file when you installed the program ??

Well, adding the websites to the Trusted list didn't help.

Doc, I do run Spyware S&D, but I'm pretty sure I didn't make a backup of my hosts file.

Also activate the Privacy tab of Tools | Internet Options...
Click Sites... and check whether wopr.com is blocked.

Just a thought here, and if you feel uncomfortable with it, just say no.

Could you provide us with the malware problem you had ?? Or even better, a link to your thread on GeeksToGo ?? It might help us to see what has been done

Uncomfortable giving information to you guys? C'mon, Doc. The only reason I went to Geeks first was because last time I had a malware problem I was referred over there by someone here - so I figured it must be the place to go.
Here's the link:
http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Windows_shu...ty-t130724.html

...and Hans - the sites button is grayed out because it is set to Accept All Cookies . When I adjust the slider and can check the list of sites, however, none of the sites I am having trouble with are on the list.

WOW !!!!!!! You've really been through the ringer and back with that junk !!! I have only skimmed over all your logs and some of the tools that he's had you use, I'm simply not familiar with (no surprise there, those folks do this all day and are very good at what they do and persistent). I'll give them a more through read tonight when I have a bit more time and post back. You've had so many different problems and so much malware on the system, I'd be doing you a disservice to speculate without reading the logs. Even then, I'm not sure what, if anything, I'll be able to add. But I'll give it a shot.

Some privacy products, like Norton Internet Security's privacy component, can be set to block cookies unless you set the site to trusted in that program as well. Not sure whether this applies to any of your security products.

I'm too bleary eyed tonight to make much sense of the logs, but will have a look again in the AM when the old lamps are a bit brighter.

Meanwhile, I'm still curious if you have a backup of the Hosts file. Humor me and open Spybot, in the top left click on Mode>Advanced and when the "Do you really want to..." window pops up click Yes and then click on the Tools section in the lower left and when that opens up click on Hosts File and then, in the upper right, click on the down arrow next to Restore Backup and see if you have a backup. If you do, select one that was created before the problem started and .

One last thing for tonight and I'm packin' it in. I just spent about an hour on your logs and believe that there is something that has dug itself deep into your system and is recreating the problem, or pulling in new ones each time you reboot and access the internet. Try doing an online scan with SpySweeper. It's the best anti-malware utility out there (IMHO) and the online scan is through and . If it finds your problem, or even if it doesn't, it's a program that is worth the $$$ to have in your arsenal.

Re: Can't log into websites (IE6.0 SP2)

Probably not applicable here going by what has evolved, but as a BTW, I have come across instances where I can not log into a site due to a 'cookie issue'.
The only conclusion I have come to is that there is a 'third-party cookie' that is being blocked, and it is impossible to tell which one from the list of blocked cookies I have as they are all referred to by IP address. The named cookie (e.g. www.company.com) is clearly visible as being allowed, but at some point in the past I've blocked some irritant like hitbox which, until then, has been inconsequential...

Re: Can't log into websites (IE6.0 SP2)

Well, the protection I'm using is Kerio Firewall and Avast! Antivirus. I'm also using a Linksys router with firewall capability, but I keep putting off looking into configuring that (procrastination at its finest) so unless it gives me some protection by default, I'm relying on Kerio and Avast. When it comes to tweaking security products I'm (probably too) cautious, afraid to make changes that will come back to bite me.
I think this whole mess started one day when Kerio failed to start, although there was probably something that caused that to happen.
That problem was behind this thread: <!post=Scary Spybot results,599024>Scary Spybot results<!/post>

Doc, I'll check on that hosts file backup when I get home - I'll also give that SpySweeper scan a shot. What have I got to lose?

Googling kerio cookies returns this as the #1 hit. See whether playing with this tab helps you log in. 14.2. The Privacy tab @ kerio.com
