    Address-list order (2003)

When I use the dropdown in my address-list to look at other lists ("Show names from the:"), always on the very top, there is the global list. Then there are (here) about 30+ other sub-lists and all the way at the bottom I find the "Outlook Address Book", "Contacts" and finally the "Personal Address Book".

I'd like to have all these four together, pref. at the top. Asked the helpdesk here but learned this order cannot be changed. Is that true?

    Ideas?

I don't think you can change that sort order. You can specify which list is displayed by default when you open the address book, by selecting Tools | Options in the address book and selecting the one you want from the 'Show this address list first' dropdown.

30 lists? That's inconvenient. I have a group of lists that all start with the word "All" but fortunately I can still see the entire list...

Anyway, when you call up the Address Book, if you press Alt+S or Shift+Tab, the focus will move to that drop-down box. If you then type the first letter of the desired list, your selection should change immediately. So G for Global Address List, C for Contacts, P for Personal Address Book. If there are duplicates with the same first letter, press again to cycle to the next.

Because P might call up Public Folders, you could rename your "Personal Address Book" to something more unique if you like. Use Tools, Email Accounts..., View or Change existing directories or address books, select your PAB, click Change..., and in the first box, you can give it any name you like, like MyPAB (assuming M would be a unique first letter). As far as I know, nothing in Outlook depends on this "display name," but possibly rules or VBA code might, so keep an eye out for any problems and you can always change it back.

After a few weeks, this might become second nature. And if not, there's always the possibility of change in Office 2007. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
