Background Color Changes

The colors on our Satellite Toshiba laptop suddenly went strange. The background on the desktop turned to a bright red and the background in Outlook Express was a bright turquoise. The icons and text remained the same. This happened 3 times in the last few days. Restarting would get rid of the problem, but it did re-occur twice more (not right away).

Any ideas as to what is causing this and how to correct it? It's a totally new one for me!

Could be heat related - check the fans and ventilation. Could be a video card going bad. Could be software - have you installed/updated anything recently that might coincide with this issue.

Thanks for the prompt reply, Joe. Your suggestions, in reverse order: no new software added recently; I think it's cooling fine as it sits on a flat glass topped table and the fan opening is not plugged - I can feel the hot air being blown out the side vent. Are there other things I should check re. heating? Lastly,iIs there a way to check a video card or to pinpoint if that is the issue? Is this something I can do myself?

I don't have one here, but could go to the office of a friend and do so there.

Joe, it's happening right now so hoped you were online and having the problem "live" might help us troubleshoot. It had not happened since I first posted, but today it happened and restart did not solve the problem this time.

    Hopefully,

    Linda

Did you try the external monitor? Do you know if you have a separate video card or is it on the motherboard?

    Re: Background Color Changes

I misunderstood, Joe, about the external monitor. What should I do re. it? Do I try to see if my laptop will work on an external monitor? Will I be able to hook this up to one? (sorry to be ignorant on all this!).The problem corrected itself again today just after I posted. Not sure how to tell about the video card location. Should it be in my documentation for this laptop somewhere or is there a way to find out?

Yes, see if the laptop functions correctly with an external monitor. You should be able to hook one up. There is almost always an standard external video port. As far as the video card goes, you'd need the original system configuration which should have been supplied to you when the system was shipped.

Thanks, Joe. I'll check to see what I can find out about the video card and will get to a place where I can try out an external monitor. Once I've done my homework, I'll post back here for the next step.

    Appreciate your help and direction!

    Re: Background Color Changes

    Joe,

Me again. Have to admit that I have put off tackling this issue as it has been perfect for 2 weeks. Unfortunately, that ended yesterday and it has been unusually coloured since then. My research into the Toshiba manuals didn't reveal any info about the video card. Also, I've been unable to find an external monitor to hook up to as yet.

Today's question: this morning, the screen has flickered into "regular colour" for a few minutes, off and on. Could something just be loose? If so, is this something I could correct do you think? I'm trying to avoid having to go the computer repair person route due to costs (although the salesman who sold us this laptop is reliable as a repair guy as well). Thescreen is flickering madly off and on right now as I type!

    Hi Linda,

Sorry to jump in late on this, but......

The screen is flickering madly off and on right now as I type!

...sounds like something is loose and just you hitting the keys is making it move just enough to cause this behavior. My suspicion is that unless you purposely ordered the laptop with a video card (more money) or it is a high end system, the video is most likely integrated into the motherboard. The order form or documentation you got with the computer should have this information. Or you could look in Device Manager. HTH

    Re: Background Color Changes

    Linda,
Yes, there are some connections that could be loose. In particular there is a small connector on the end of a flat ribbon cable leading from the display to the motherboard. If you are not experienced in taking laptop computers apart, do not try to locate, remove and reseat it. To help diagnose the problem, please follow the above recommendation and hook an external monitor to the laptop. After you connect it you will have to press a key one or more times to switch between the laptop display, the external display and both displays at once. If the external monitor is looks fine, your laptop display and/or its connectors need attention.

    Re: Background Color Changes

    Paul and Doc Watson,

Sorry not to get back to you sooner. Last time I posted, I forgot to check Yes for receiving email notification so hadn't realized your 2 replies were awaiting me!!

Thank you both for your helpful hints. The laptop is behaving itself right now, but I have since contacted the computer guy at the store where this was purchased and with whom we have a long standing "technical relationship". We've agreed that I will bring in the computer when it starts flickering again to have him check the documentation re. the video card and to hook it up to an external monitor to test it. He suggested your possible cause for the problem as well, Paul.

Will post results back here once I have them. Again, many thanks for ALL of your advice and support. And, don't worry, I will not attempts any tightening of components myself!

    Linda
