    Problem with fake subscribers

Hello, I have a newsletter that I send out through freelist. The list is very small. Recently, I've had a couple of subscribers join using fake email addresses. The automated welcome letter has bounced back. I'm wondering if this could be some kind of manipulation by spammers. Why would people join a newsletter list with a fake email address? The newsletter is freely available online. Could it be the action of some kind of spider? I guess I should remove the fake subscribers from the list before sending out the next newsletter (I only send one two or three times a year). I'd be grateful for some comments and advice.

    Thanks,

    Chris (Hunt)

, Yes, get them off your subscribers list immediately. Another idea is to have another confirmation email text box so that it has to be entered in twice and maybe a little graphic that asks the subscriber to fill in the number or letters on the graphic as a confirmation. A spider can't read graphics and may help cut down on these phonies my <img src=/S/2cents.gif border=0 alt=2cents width=15 height=15>

Assuming this was done by an automated process, and that it wouldn't be too annoying to potential subscribers, you could use one of those strange graphical "tests." This CMU site has some examples. I'm not sure whether they also offer the code...

My isp provides anonymous email addresses to protect against spiders and spammers. I've been using this service and haven't had any problems, but I'm wondering if there could be a glitch in someone's anonymous email address that caused everything to bounce back.
