    A sign of the times....

This is not really a puzzle to answer, just one to ponder and have a bit of fun with....and maybe (as usual) provoke a discussion...If any of you have any other examples of this ilk I would like to hear from you <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    Conundrum 1

In the Magic Forest there are two competing sign writers, Leonardo and Leonard. They have been competitors for a good number of years but it is well known in these parts that Leonardo always inscribed false statements and Leonard only true ones. Leonardo and Leonard were the only Forest creatures able to create signs of this standard. Jezza Bear was tricycling through the Magic Forest the other day when he saw this sign

    <table border=1><td> <div style="width: 100%; background-color: #FFFFFF;"> <big><big>THIS SIGN WAS MADE BY LEONARDO</big></big> </div hiblock></td></table>

    <img src=/S/hmmn.gif border=0 alt=hmmn width=15 height=15> Jezza Bear exclaimed "Who made the sign?"

    Conundrum 2

This time Jezza Bear is really confused.... what about this sign? Who made this sign, Leonardo or Leonard?

    <table border=1><td> <div style="width: 100%; background-color: #FFFFFF;"> <big><big>THE STATEMENT ON THIS SIGN IS FALSE!</big></big> </div hiblock></td></table>

I didn't know that the magic forest was located on Crete (Greece)!

Don't believe a word of it, they're all liars.

    <img src=/S/hmmn.gif border=0 alt=hmmn width=15 height=15> My guess ...

    Conundrum 1
    <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">LEONARDO</span hide>

    Conundrum 2
    <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">LEONARD</span hide>

    If correct - proof coming after several more <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16> <small>hic</small>

    1. <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">Leonardo made the sign, but it said "Leonard". Leonard corrected it by adding the "O".</span hide>
    2. If this is in reference to sign1. <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">it might have been made by Leonard before he made the change, or Leonardo afterwards.</span hide>

Re: A sign of the times....

    Hi Alan

    1) I would say you were spot on with this.

If Jezza Bear came across the sign, then it would mean either that Leonardo sometimes wrote true statements on signs or that Leonard sometimes wrote false statements on signs. It is clearly stated that there are only two sign writers in the Magic Forest, so this is not a paradox, but what is commonly known as a swindle. Your answer clears the point....have a [choccy bar]

    2) I suppose it is was wrong for me to include Leonardo and Leonard in this part of the puzzle as it was a distraction as we muddy the water somewhat. take the two sign writers out of the equation and it becomes a classic logicians question. I must say it is good fun putting those guys in though as it puts a twist in a classic puzzle. I will give you [um] another [choccy bar] and can you only have it if you can comply with this instruction <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

    <table border=1><td> <div style="width: 100%; background-color: #FFFFFF;"> <big><big>DO NOT READ THIS SIGN</big></big> </div hiblock></td></table>

    GOOD answer - I was thinking in simplistic terms again <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16>

    OK Scott

Just to keep the brain cells ticking over

    <table border=1><td> <div style="width: 100%; background-color: #FFFFFF;"> <big><big>THIS SIGN WAS MADE BY GEORGE</big></big> </div hiblock></td></table>

...and the sign writers were called George and Tony and hadn't been tampered with, what would the answer be now. George always lies and Tony always tells the truth.... just for discussion <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

<span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">It could have been made by both of them. Tony printed up the begining and told George to put on "by George and Tony" (to make it true). George lied and only put on his name...</span hide>

<span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">Or do your prefer that George "made" the sign and Tony painted it</span hide>

or similar to one of the initial comments:

<span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">Tony created the sign "This sign was made by Tony" and George saw it and painted over the "Tony" and made it say "George" or even that George created the sign "This sign was made by Tony" (a lie) and Tony saw it and painted over the "Tony" and made it say "George" [like Leonard to Leonardo]. Either could have been sick of all the signs that said "This sign was made by Tony" and never giving credit to George.</span hide>
