WinXP Pro Won't Shutdown (WinXP Pro SP2)

A year or more ago I had a hard disc crash and had to replace the disc and re-install everything. Soon after that I installed a new version of Norton AntiVirus and my PC began to not completely shutdown when it was supposed to. It gets to the point where the screen says "Windows is shutting down" and just hangs there. After all the disc activity dies out I force it off and then a restart works fine. Back when this happened I tried a lot of things to try to fix the problem but I was never successful. So, I've lived with it for a long time. The other day I uninstalled NAV and installed ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite.

Can anyone suggest anything I can do to correct this problem short of starting all over with a clean install? I know I can do that but that was so painful after the disc failure I hate to go through it agian.

    Thanks,
    Bill

    Doc,

That article has a lot of info in it so I'll study it and see if anything helps. BTW, my problem is on a Toshiba laptop that came with WinXP Pro on it. There is one hint in that article about a Toshiba laptop having this problem.

    Thanks,
    Bill
